Anything on that other side of the University and Opelika Road intersection going out toward Opelika is definitely sketchy. Granted the mall is on the tail end of it and closer to Auburn but there's no denying that.

Harvest Thrift shopping center alone is sketch and that's like half a mile down the road from the mall

I'm going to disagree. There is nothing wrong with that area, it is just old. People like new things like TigerTown. But keep going down Glenn past TigerTown, through the 4 way stop and see what you run into. Went that way everyday to the Boys and Girls Club one summer.

It's not just old. It's old and rundown. It looks rough. There are more than a few empty storefronts too (or were like a year ago). I think malls in general are going this way (with the exception of higher end ones). Online shopping has really hurt the idea of a "mall". It's just not being kept up well, so it LOOKS sketchy even if it isn't. Slowly but surely perception does become reality.

Haven't read the whole thread so... 1. Anything new? 2. Anyone hurt?

Thanks ahead of time and hope everyone is ok/lives.

When I was in school we used to hang out at the mall a lot as well as the movie theater across the way. That was a long long time ago though. Back then it wasn't bad. I'm not sure what it is like today though because when I come to games at Auburn I rarely come that way. The mall is several miles away from campus for those interested. And yes Auburn has had a mall for a long time now. It's right next to the barn and cow fields we keep over there.

The mall is going through serious renovations. I know they're trying to make it a nicer shopping center, but having a shooting like this doesn't help.

I'll be curious to see what the motive was. Robbery? Yeah, the mall is fricked. Domestic? It'll be okay.

What surprises me the most is how Auburn can support the mall and Tiger Town. There just aren't that many people in the Auburn/Opelika area, and Tiger Town is fricking ginormous.

For once I'm going to agree with Brannigan. I wouldn't call that area sketchy by any means. There are some aging buildings around there but overall it's been kept up. I think that whole area has just gone down some since Tiger Town has been growing at such a rapid pace. I doubt anyone here would feel unsafe going to that mall.

UPDATE:

57 year old shot. Not life threatening.

Suspect at large. Motive has not been determined.

Yeah, it doesn't get sketchy until you the shopping center near Walmart on Pepperrell Pkwy.

Unfortunately you are correct. And for a community as small and close knit as Auburn, they have had more than their share of bad incidents hit the headlines in the last couple of years.
