For Bama fans only: how many of you believe all the NC Bama claims are legit?

Curious.

This subject has always fascinated me.

Paul W. Bryant died in January 1983, believing that Bama had won only 6 National Championships, and that he was the Head Coach for every damn one of them.

The good folks at UA took the opportunity after his death to piss all over that record of individual excellence by 'retroactively' claiming titles that didn't exist at the time the games were actually played.

Fact: there was no such thing as a "National Champion" in major college football before the Associated Press began its poll of sportswriters in 1936.

Jeezus, you have a great history already, and no one comes close in the SEC in the number of LEGITIMATE championships - both NCs and CCs.

Why do you assclowns feel compelled to pump yourselves up even more? Feelings of inadequacy, much?

not intended to be a flame, i'm really just curious. i see where the university promotes the NCs, but i would like to know if its a top down or bottom up perspective.

do the fans buy into it?

I'm surprised you bama fans aren't saying the number should be more like 19/20

They may be sketchy according to opposing fans but we were legitimately awarded the NC by the major organizations for that time. The AP wasn't established before 1936 but football was still played and we were the dominant team back then, winning the Rose Bowl 4 times, which is considered the "granddaddy of em all."

Would we still have those NCs if the BCS was around back then? There's noway of knowing that but that was the system in place back then and everyone has to deal with that just like we have to deal with stupid voters and the BCS now.

Care to post some polls to back up that claim?

Eh, not so much. The word "retroactive" comes to mind.

And if Auburn decided to claim titles like that, we'd have a few back then as well. However, we opted not to because it's pretty damn tacky IMO.

How about an unbiased source? Like, maybe, the New York Times?

quote:

With Derrick Lassic rushing for 135 yards and two touchdowns, and Alabama's defense smothering Miami's rushing game and confusing Torretta, the Heisman Trophy winner, Alabama (13-0) made certain that when final polls are released Saturday, it will clinch its sixth outright national championship since The Associated Press news media poll began in 1936.

That's actually one less than I gave you credit for - wonder which one they didn't count?

There WERE no 'major organizations for that time'. That's because the entire concept of a "NATIONAL CHAMPION" in college football didn't exist.

The Rose Bowl was a football exhibition game, put on as part of the Tournament of Roses celebration. The game was just a minor attraction to the parade in those days. Hell, the damn thing didn't even sell out for the first time until 1947.

I'd swap 1941 for 1945. We were undefeated and untied Rose Bowl champs that year too

I wasn't alive back then and I don't know the complete history but I do know that we were awarded by certain organizations for our undefeated seasons and Rose Bowl victories. It may not be popular with opposing fans because we're hated by pretty much everybody but it's not our fault Bama had great years back then and put southern football on the map.

There are also years that we went unefeated and got the shaft. 1966 comes to mind.

Why do you feel the need to 'claim' any of them?

You finished #1 in one or more of the two major polls 7 times. Isn't that enough?
