I watch as much football as I can but I've missed one or two Bama games this year. Do you guys run a fullback much? Seems like I remember Trent being in the backfield alone other than Wildcat. Anything here would be appreciated.

On the other side of the coin, has anyone you guys have played had a running game that was worth a shite, or specifically, have you seen any good fullback play this year?

I'll start off with our guys. James Stampley has been the starter for the last 1.5 years, but it seems like JC Copeland is getting the majority of the snaps. We run a fullback pretty much every single play out of multiple formations. I dont think we have ever tried to pass to them or get yardage. They just like to smash people.

JC Copeland Profile 6'1" 280#
quote:

Hard-hitting fullback who moved from the defensive line to the offensive backfield early the 2010 season ... Will remain at fullback in 2011 ... Punishing blocker with good ball skills.

James Stampley Profile 5'10" 239#
quote:

Thought to be among the hardest hitters on the team as he has broken 25 of his own face masks and one helmet in collisions in practice or games ... Exceptional blocker ... Seen action mainly in short yardage situations ...

Single back, 2 TE system. More accurately a TE and H-Back system.

Michael Williams is 6-6 269 lbs
Brad Smelley 6-3 229 lbs

We almost never run a FB. We run a H-Back pretty often. Only time we use a fullback is on short yardage goal line situations.

ETA: Cody was our fullback in 2008 and 2009. Can't remember who we are using this year. But it's a Dlineman.

ETA: Not a Dlineman - It's a TE (Brandon Lewis)

You're thinking of Brandon Lewis (6'3" 290).

ETA: Also, I've seen us use Jalston Fowler as a FB (6'0" 245) in short yardage/goal line on occasion.

They've used Fowler once as a lead FB, and they used Brandon Lewis as an offset FB once or twice early on.

They haven't used either in that capacity in the last several game though, so it might of just been some experimenting...

Alabama uses two TE rather than a FB. However, one of the TE is an H-Back which sometimes lines up offset in the backfield. But, no, Bama doesn't really run a true full back in the pro-style, I-formation sense.

Poole and UT was probably the best running attack Bama has faced. One good thing about Bama matching up with a power running team that uses a fullback is that Bama's LBs are big and good at stopping the run. When they meet LSUs FBs, Bama's LBs won't win everytime, but they will win more than LSU is used to. Will be a great matchup within the game to watch. LSU's monsters slamming into Hightower, Nico Johnson, and company.

Going to be insanely hard-hitting. Can't freaking wait for this game.

I'd say him or Silas Redd for PSU, who has caught fire lately...

Penn State also used FB's a good bit (Zordich and Suhey).

definately.

I must admit I am glad to hear you guys aren't going to have some huge FB plowing through our 220# linebackers

It's been years since I've seen Alabama run a straight up I Form offense (not on the Goal line).

Haven't seen a toss sweep by Alabama in a decade (not counting the strange Shotgun toss sweeps)

Richardson plays both FB and RB at the same time.

Pretty sure we scored on every play he came in on.

^^^^This^^^^

His first broken tackle counts as the fullback's block. His second is the RB. And the third is the awesomeness that is TR.

When LSU wins on Nov5, it will be because of LSU's fullback play (offensively speaking).

BidEd - you left off Hilliard at the FB spot -- my favorite play this year was last game when Hilliard lined up in FB with Blue as tailback. Hilliard was off-set to the left. When the ball was snapped, Lee faked the hand-off to blue to the left and then gave it to Hilliard as he was running right.

I expect to see that formation, and play a couple of times Nov. 5 for very positive yardage.

Bama has one of the best fullbacks in the country in Fowler if we would play him in the position more often; he's mainly a goaline and clean up runner than a fullback witch i hate but he's a beast; i don't really think there's many rushing attacks that could go against Bama's and LSU D-lines.

I disagree, Fowler is no more of a FB than Brandon Jacobs, Michael Bush, or Christian Okoye.

He's lined there once or twice, but he's definitely not a lead blocker. They sneak him in there because of his ability, just like did with Roy Upchurch a few seasons back. Send him out on pass patterns and maybe sneak a short handoff...
