Since I've zero doubt that you wanted the actual answer, I'm here with cowbells on to explain ....
quote:
Yell Practice began in 1913, while A&M was still an all-male military school. Several companies would gather together to "learn heartily the old time pep."
The first Midnight Yell was held in 1932. Two freshmen asked the senior Yell Leaders to hold a midnight practice so that students would be motivated for the upcoming football game against archrival Texas Longhorns. The Yell Leaders said that while they liked the idea, they couldn't authorize a Yell Practice at that hour. However, they said that they just might "show up" at the campus YMCA Building that evening around midnight. The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band met them at the YMCA, and soon the bulk of the student body had gathered. The cadets used railroad flares to light the event, and a tradition was born.

That's cool.
Are A&M fans capable of making noise without going to some gay practice the night before the game?
Seems like a pretty rad way to spend a Friday night.
My observation from going to the UF/aTm game earlier this year is that they should worry less about yell practice and more about getting both sides of the field to actually make some noise. The students are loud as any you will find, but the west stands were a snooze fest. The overall effect is not particularly earth-shattering.
As far as the thread, yeah, the cowbells annoy me too.

Where are the vuvuzelas when we need them?
Vuvuzelas would be much better if the soccer fans didn't just blow on them continuously, creating that dull drone. Synchronized and blowing them louder when necessary would make them much more effective.
International soccer fans just need proper artificial noisemaker education.

Westside stands = the portion of the stadium filled with ticket purchasers of exceeding knowledge, experience, and ... age.
That will never change.
Former Students are, as we describe 'em in Aggieland, no longer part of the Twelfth Man.

The legend is that they once had their star football player (I would name him, but State has never really had any memorable stars, so you wouldn't know him) wandered into a pasture (somewhere on campus) and made sweet, sweet love to ze cow. State then beat a vaunted Ole Miss team because the officials were also allowed to make sweet, sweet love to ze cow. While they are illegal and there may come a day when they are outlawed entirely, you will never take ze cow away!!!
