Serious question. Is there a current coach in the SEC that has a worse resume than Pope?

Serious Answer

Pre Cal

UK had few NBA stars after college but won 7 Natty's with 4 different coaches over decades and decades

Cal

Had one of the most envied NBA list of recruited players yet managed only 1 Natty over a decade and more. That 1 Natty came from "The Brow" and a player who was old school.

You tell me if Hogs got the next Curry or Jimbo?

I will hang up and listen.

I’m starting to be okay with Pope. I think he will be good, maybe even great. Just a lot riding on the assumption that the only reason he didn’t recruit well is because it’s BYU, which is fair, but still risky.

I’m more just worried about what the roster will look like year 1. Plenty of NIL on the table so we will see

Maybe he can't recruit because he is cringey

Well if this is true, then his cringey personality doesn't matter.

Dude seems like a goofy version of Harsin.

Revisionist history.

Actually, pre Cal you went through some pretty bad years

You hired Sutton away from us in when he had turned to the bottle. Frank Broyles had been on him about his drinking and when KY came calling it was easier to leave than deal with it

The experiment failed booster set Eddie up to be the fall guy with NCAA and the program suffered.

Hired PItino very good coach brought pride and respect back to KY but he left

Then you went through the Tubby. Billy years. Sure Tubby won a title but it was Pitinos team. I mean Berry Switzer won a super bowl with the cowboys but we know.

When Billy was let go your coaching search wasnt going well. Some KY fans felt Cal was beneath them due to Ncaa stuff even when he was hired to save the day.

Cal fed the beast up until the landscape changed. The transfer portal change the dynamics more so than NIL. It made it harder to win with freshman. The fact that two of the three demands Cal had for Arkansas were increased NIL and getting transfers qualified speaks volumes on the handcuffs he was in at Ky. You cant gripe at the man for having all fresmen when your transfer restriction are unrealistic for the avg. College basketball players

I'm the same, the more I think about it, I think he's going to be a good coach. He needs good recruiters on his staff, which I'm sure he will have.

Next year is somewhat lost to me. We will probably one or two returning players, and one recruit and whatever he finds in the portal. I view it like 1989 and just hope that if we have an average record, there is a lot of excitement in what we see for the future.

Well consider that not many non-Mormons want to go to BYU and the strict atmosphere on alcohol, sexual relations and misbehavior in general and it knocks out a sizable portion of young athletes.

Then consider what he has done without such athletes and he may actually do well at UK. Time will tell.

KSR says this was a solely MB decision. Time will tell.

Excellent - you have moved onto bargaining. Acceptance is close.

It's fun to believe that. But Kentucky's administration won't allow their basketball program to fall into obscurity for that long like we did ours.

You forget I lived in Arkansas and knew both well.

You need to close read my Hindu post

Sutton got Pitino

Billy Clyde got Cal

(take as obvious I have been around awhile and know)

quote:

Then you went through the Tubby.

Tubby was the reincarnation of Joe B

Both were the Vishnu's

I knew Tubby and his family VERY well and can assure you of his coaching ability. Look at him head to head against Little Ricky and who won more with less? Tubby was boring defense to Rickys exciting offense but give me Tubby over Ricky head to head.

quote:

Some KY fans felt Cal was beneath them due to Ncaa stuff even when he was hired to save the day.

Two big donors wanted Cal (like Walton and Tyson for Hogs) and that is why he was hired.

quote:

Cal fed the beast up until the landscape changed.

Correct. like Ricky making hay on the 3pt shot from the pros, Cal made hay on "one and done". You think this is NIL, you are already behind the curve. You just don't see it yet but you will. My guess is with Cal gone, those 2 donors (both billionaires) and the corporate folks will return and the NIL money will double or triple in a few years for UK.

Only 3 since the tournament expanded to 64 teams. A couple of those natty’s were from when there were only 8 teams in the tournament.
