No Texas A&M = all these lists are shite. Our student "section" is the East side of the stadium.

I just never understood rating entire universities against one another through an academic rubric. Seems so arbitrary. I'm in the Architecture program at AU, I only care about where it is in relation to other Architecture programs across the country.

Increasing the number of out of state students, especially from the NE, helps because those students will most likely return home after college and then those areas will begin to see more UA degrees. UA has had a large number of students come from Maryland and DC area and because of that you are seeing more Bama grads in that area.

I was actually surprised to see this. When I was in Knoxville I thought it was a nice campus. Though it was gameday and full of people, so maybe that blocked my view.

They are working on beautifying UT but we have an ugly arse campus. Still love it though!

In terms of geographical setting, Tennessee might be the most beautiful location. Knoxville is an awful city for a college IMO.

I agree with this

As I grew up in K-Town I love it but since I have also lived in Chattanooga. I must state that as a whole Chatt is such a nicer city and much more active on any given day then Knoxville.

This may take into account all sporting events, not just football.

Otherwise, yeah, not sure how credible all of this is. It also maybe something like what % of students attend sporting events. Since aTm is so big, half of the stadium is still a small % of student body compared to other schools.

there are other more specific rankings,

Best Undergrad Business School
Best Undergrad Engineering School, etc.

LINK

someone else can pull the SEC schools out of these if they want and start a new post :)

Helps what? Brand recognition of the entire university? Sure, I'd buy that. And that may matter depending on what type of degree you're getting. I'm arguing that in individual industries (like the one I'm perusing), strength of education as understood as an individual component of a university matters far more than the aggregate of the entire academic spectrum of a university. Firms don't care I graduated from Auburn, they care that I graduated from Auburn's School of Architecture.

It might be a percentage thing. We give out about 30,000 football sports passes for 50,000 students and most of them will be used to attend the game. So we hover around 55-60% student attendance rate.

My uncle is Senior VP of design for HOK. When I told him I was going to auburn, he didn't know anything about them, but he said I have heard of Auburn architecture(or something like that, its been long time)

Engineering

Biological/Agricultural- #4 Texas A&M, #6 Florida
Industrial- #6 Texas A&M
Materials- #10 Florida

NR in: Overall engineering, Aerospace, Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Engineering Science, Environmental, Mechanical

It appears Georgia Tech took with them the only SEC school to ever have a nationally respected engineering program

ETA: Adding University of Texas would certainly help- they're ranked in nearly every category

I'm not disagreeing with you, just pointing out a few things to help conversation in the thread.

My opinion: with the exception of Vanderbilt, we're all pretty much the same. Degrees from any school will be viewed the same in-state, and viewed the same out of state. Really not a big difference- Grad school is more important anyway

I can already tell you, as a hiring manager, this is incredibly accurate.

Unless the job required a post-graduate degree, the simple fact of the matter is that you have to go to a SERIOUSLY top-flight school for it to register. Very few hiring managers are going to consider a degree from UF to trump, say, a degree from LSU. Of course, getting a degree from Vandy, MIT, Stanford, an Ivy League school, etc - that's a different story.

Now, post-graduate, the school DOES matter, but those post-graduate schools are treated almost as independent entities from the host school. Alabama's Law School, Auburn's school of Veterinary Medicine, etc - they're not looked at as "Alabama" or "Auburn", per se. They get judged on a completely different level.

Ultimately - go to a school that will:
Give you learning tracks that will teach and maintain interest
Not make you bankrupt
Is in the state you want to END UP in
