George Rogers - '81 draft

Should have another one next year hopefully in Jadeveon Clowney, but who knows.

I think our best shot at #1 overall is either Jake Matthews or Cedric Ogbuehi.

Can't count Bo. He was drafted twice, 1st overall and 123rd. Averages out to a 3rd runder.

Only legit NFL starter is possibly Murray and that is pushing it.

2 superbowl wins, 2 SBMVPs + living in new york >>>>>> playing for one of the worst franchises in the NFL. The chargers are almost as bad as the chiefs at managing players.

I really thought Namath was a #1 until I looked just looked it up.
He was. He was selected and signed by the AFL New York Jets as the 1st pick of the 1st round in 1965. LINK

This was back when the NFL and the AFL were different entities.

quote:

As a pro, Namath was at the center of changes that popularized professional football and its championship games. In 1965 he was signed to the New York Jets by owner Sonny Werblin, a former Hollywood television producer, for a then-record $427,000 over three years. Thus Namath became "Broadway Joe." At the time the Jets were a mediocre team in the relatively new American Football League (AFL), and their signing of Namath and the AFL's lucrative deals with NBC to broadcast AFL games helped transform the AFL from an upstart to a serious National Football League rival.

To end bidding wars for collegiate players like Namath, the NFL arranged in 1965 to begin a yearly interleague championship game called the Super Bowl in 1967 and to merge with the AFL in 1970. LINK

The year Namath was picked #1 by the AFL; the NFL picked an Auburn player #1 - NY Giants Tucker Fredrickson. LINK

Never disrespected his prowess. *wish I was a Manning* I think he could have taken the Chargers to the big one... he is that talented. Still cried like a bitch even though a huge pay day was coming. *shakes head*

And you're right but SD was a hell of a lot more primed at that time to make run than NY.

Rivals Alabama and Auburn had both top picks in professional football in 1965.

Another bit of trivia. Alabama barely missed on being the team to have the #1 pick of the first draft ever in 1936.

The very first draft was started in 1936 and the Heisman Trophy winner Jay Berwanger was the first player ever selected. He chose not to play pro football.

So, Riley Smith, Alabama's QB, taken second overall by the Boston Redskins, holds the distinction of being the first drafted player to play in the NFL.
