I watched this NYE and it wasvery good. It's amazing that Broyles had Jimmy Johnson,Jerry Jones on his team and Barry Switzer and JOhnny Majors as coaches. Another interesting point is that Broyles passed over Jimmy Johnson for the Arkansas job.I wonder how different things could have been if Jimmy Followed Holtz.

We always seem to hire the wrong guy when forced to make a choice

Haven't seen it yet. I find it interesting and I intend to watch it. I am curious if Arky won any championships from any of these great football minds that passed through there? Or did they all win their championships elsewhere?

It's ridiculous how many successful coaches came through the Arkansas program or were born in this state who never head coached here.
So many championships we can't claim.

Yeah, Bear Bryant was from Arkansas, of course. But I meant to actually go through your school's program. It is remarkable. You would think that at some point Arkansas would have asked one of them to come back and coach there.

The program said broyles wanted to hire Jimmy before holt, but after holtz he thought someone else would be better. I was like damn, arky missed out.

On the one hand, all of these great coaches came through there, and that is something to be proud of. On the other hand, no hardware themselves to show for it. Has to make them feel like this also.

Ken Hatfield was also on that team. Arkansas had some crazy good assistant coaches under Broyles.

Jimmy Johnson, Jerry Jones, Barry Switzer, and Ken Hatfield all have 1964 National Championship rings. So yes, they have hardware to show for it.
Broyles went with Holtz first, then Broyles decided on Ken Hatfield instead of Jimmy Johnson after Holtz. Hatfield was also on the 1964 National Championship team. Hatfield went on to win over 70% of his games at Arkansas in the 80's but a rift between he and Broyles sent him packing. A couple years later is when Arkansas joined the SEC.
Things may have been different under Johnson, but Broyles had a problem with meddling and I doubt Jimmy would have been at Arkansas longer than 5 or 6 years anyway.
Jimmy did take his frustration out on Kenny when highly ranked Arkansas hosted highly ranked Miami in Little Rock though.

On a side note, they mentioned Hugo Bezdek during the Rose Bowl in reference to Penn State football. He coached at Arkansas and penned the name Razorbacks to us as a mascot,we were the Cardinals.
He coached here from 1908-1912.Wound up at Penn State in 1918.

Jimmy Johnson's first head coaching job was at Picayune High School in Picayune, MS. Little known fact.
