In my opinion if an SEC team goes undefeated, or only has one loss to another good SEC team, they should have an automatic bid into the final four, regardless of their non conference schedule. They could decide to play only FCS schools and go undefeated in conference play and still have a lock for a spot over another undefeated school from another conference. The reason for my thoughts is because of the insane grind that is the SEC. Week in and week out teams are forced to play against high caliber teams with strong fan bases and intense bragging rights on the line. There is no other conference in college football like this so to the victor should go ultimate spoils.
I feel like this is a big deal because I have heard multiple people speak on how they feel like if Ohio State goes undefeated they are an obvious lock. Well I do give them credit on being defending national champions, but their hardest non conference game is Virginia Tech. After that they play some schools and are in a weak conference. Should they be allowed in over a one loss Auburn team who has to grind through the SEC? Thats just my opinion so let me know what you think.

Good luck going undefeated in the SEC these days, I don't care who you are. Very difficult.

Nothing pisses off Ohio State fans more than having to face the reality that the SEC is the nation's premier athletic conference.

One thing pisses them off more - facing a conference opponent with a pulse.

But fortunately, they haven't had to deal with that for years.

I've pointed out how weak the "grind" argument is on multiple occasions. Most of the time these tough opponents are scheduled after bye weeks/glorified bye weeks against directional schools. Not always, and overall the SEC schedule is better than the B1G schedule. But this year OSU plays MSU and Michigan back to back weeks.

Look up who Bama/Auburn/Florida etc are playing the weekend before rivalry week. (Auburn plays Idaho, Bama plays Charleston Southern, Florida plays FAU, South Carolina plays The Citadel, UGA Plays Georgia Southern)

Those are 5 of your teams in the middle of the "grind" who are playing absolute jokes in November, getting another bye week. It's smart scheduling by the SEC for sure, and I'm not really blaming them, but don't give me the "insane grind" when you have The Citadel in mid November

Edit: And any team who goes undefeated basically has a pass, Baylor would have last year too

The "grind" argument is a legitimate point, but the problem is its subjectivity. There just aren't enough games to establish how teams compare to each other, so the "grind" argument only works if you start from the same assumption about conference strength.

It is true, though, that playing more physical and more athletic teams week to week takes more of a toll by the end of the season. Unfortunately, this is not a very quantifiable argument.

Agreed. I guess the question is which is more difficult:

Having UGA, Idaho and Bama the last 3 weeks, or having Illinois, Michigan State and Michigan.

UGA and Bama are way better than the 2nd team on OSU's list (maybe better than MSU too, but that's hard to decide today), but Idaho is way worse than the 3 teams OSU is playing

You can have the best conference if we've got the best team. And, how'd Auburn fare against Wisky? Mizzou against IU? I'll hang up and listen.

Likelihood of ANY team going unbeaten is fairly low.
