Why does it matter? If I hadn't gone to those few games I'm an a-hole? What about all the kids who don't care about any sports including their own schools? Are they assholes? Why don't they have to like the team?
How much do you have to put into trying to act like you're a fan of the other sports team you have no interest in and did not come to school to see one iota, in order to be good in your eyes?

Yeah I have a degree from miss state and also from ole miss . But have always been an ole miss fan (even when I went to state).
Went to state because I figured I'd at least study there , had a little problem with that at ole miss at least in my undergrad days ....

I honestly feel you're the one with insanely fricked up priorities. A favorite sports team is not that big of a deal, and doesn't have to be reflection of your life's journey. It's just a fricking sports team. Who cares this much who someone roots for?

No, they aren't assholes because they don't choose to wrap themselves in another university's brand.
If they don't want to care about any sports fine. Hell that is probably how it should be, the sports are supposed to be a sideshow for the main event of learning. As long as these non sports fans don't run away from association with their university otherwise they are a-ok.
The problem is when people put a sports brand (like Bama) above the university they are actually tied to.

It isn't some litmus test of how many games you went to, or how big of a fan you are. Heck it doesn't even matter if football is involved.
If you would rather have people associate you with a university that you have no legitimate tie to (A), instead of a university you attended (B), just because University A is more successful in a fricking sport than university B or because you were born in that state or some stupid shite like that, then you are an self-hating a-hole. Period.
Pretty simple to me.

Which is exactly why it shouldn't be a big deal to put your team first instead of going out of your way to associate with a winning program above and beyond your actual university.

University teams are more than brands, more than NFL-lite teams. They represent the university. It matters because higher education matters.
When the football program acts bad it reflects poorly on the school. Ask Penn St. fans about that.

I agree. I grew up the biggest Ole Miss fan on the planet. All my friends went to State and so did I. I tried to remain a Rebel, but it lasted about 6 weeks into the fall semester. I totally changed the other way and became a full fledged Dawg lover. I'll still see people I haven't seen since high school, and they can't believe I'm a huge MSU fan. Going to a school and graduating changes loyalties. No way could I have a degree from MSU on my wall and be an Ole Miss fan. No way.

Many pro franchises are tied to their cities via stadium deals. You can move to that city, pay those taxes, be involved in that community and still keep your favorite sports team.

This is pretty common. A friend of mine went to LSU for undergrad and Bama for graduate school and loathes the Tide.
As some other posters have noted, almost every other instance of this dynamic that I have encountered involves Ole Miss. I understand, I wouldn't root for Ole Miss even if I went there, either.

Was born in Alabama, grew up a Bama fan. The family moved to Atlanta when I was eight, was still a Bama fan. The family moved to Florida when I was in my teens, still a Bama fan. Was accepted at UF and went to school at UF, was still a Bama fan. My oldest son also graduated from UF, I'm still a Bama fan. The wife is a Gator and she doesn't even get it. Yep, still a Bama fan.
