I don't expect anything to change. But I think it should. Many in the media have pointed out that they need two levels of targeting.

But most in here are probably just die hard fans of their own team just like I am and are coming in here to give LSU fans a hard time lol. That's fine. But the reality is, there's something wrong with the rule as it is. Even aTm's coach said this. Something should be done. Regardless of what team you happen to root for.

I will probably be banned from my fanbase for this post but...

I've rewatched the Devin White video a few more times.

I don't see how they overturn this. I don't think it was blantant and would rather it not have been called in the first place but I can now see what Marcus Spears is saying.

It looks enough like targeting based on the rules such as they are.

White got up into the neck area. You can see his helmet in that area. You can see Fitz's helmet getting rocked. They declared Fitz as a "defenseless player".

If I'm being fully honest, I can see why the league didn't overturn it.

And to Marcus Spears' real point, best not to take that chance and let the refs put you in timeout. He didn't need to take that shot. The QB already released the ball. I don't love the targeting rules at all but everybody has to play by them (well, most everybody).

All that said, God help the refs if they call any targeting fouls on LSU during the Bama game.

It's a pussy arse rule. I hate it. I wish it had to be way more flagrant than it currently has to be before it's called.

But, you are correct. As the rule is currently, that was targeting.

Sucks for White and the LSU fanbase. It's no ones fault other than the people that created the dumbass rule and Devin White.

It's not even the rule that bothers me. It's the punishment.

All of this may be true. But is it right to eject a guy for that? Fitz was not at risk of being seriously injured by what White did. And that's what the rule is designed for. It's designed to protect the player from being seriously injured. So there is a clear fundamental problem when you can use the definition of the rule to eject and suspend a player for what White did. Something needs to change.

Yeah, as Spears said, "this is the new football".

I also get the conspiracy angle but I'm not gonna get into all that other than the entertainment factor. Might make for some great Mardi Gras floats next Carnival.

Why would the correct call be overturned?!?! Stupid lil corndogs. Watching them get destroyed at home is going to be delicious.

It's a bang bang play so I don't fault White for it. He tried to hold back. But yes. The rule sucks and needs to be changed.

Probably. But for now, player safety and overreacting to fear of concussions rules the land. That's why the rule exists.

Basically put White out there and see if they're willing to cancel a primetime network game.

Yeah, I don't fault him much. We are asking a *lot* of these guys to have that much control of their bodies while trying to corral the offensive player. But in this case, Fitz had just released the ball (thus defenseless) and the only reason to hit him wasn't to make a tackle but to deal a blow. That can be totally legal but with this rule you can't hit the defenseless player in the head or neck area.

Marcus may have a good suggestion. He said do like the NBA and have a flagrant 1 and flagrant 2.

quote:

In the NBA, you get two flagrant 1 fouls before you’re ejected. But, with a flagrant 2, you are automatically ejected because there was malicious intent.

That could work. What White did certainly wasn't malicious. It's targeting by the letter of the law. If it was a "flagrant 1" type situation, he would've received the memo.

But as the current rule stands, there is zero tolerance and if in doubt, they throw you out.

Exactly. And I think that's something most people can agree on. And no. You probably don't even notice this stuff or care about it until it affects your own team.

But there's no reason not to change the rule like that. The only reason for not changing the rule I'm getting is "seriousness of a foul does not matter". Which is nonsense. The seriousness of a foul absolutely matters when the foul has an ejection penalty strapped to it. You can't just give that serious of a penalty out for something so small. Keep the rule, just get better control with how it's used.

As a Bama fan I am sorry to hear that. Either way it goes there should be no excuses. Both teams at full strength. All this does is gives LSU a rallying point! At home with an intimidating atmosphere, enraged fans and now an enraged team. But there you go.
