I was a classmate of his at Bradley Central High School, Cleveland, Tennessee (class of 62). He was a remarkable athlete, not just in football. He was an All State basketball player and a scratch golfer. RIP, Steve. Nobody who knew you ever had a bad thing to say about you.

However, he was a solid QB in his own right.

And tough as nails. Steve was driven into the bench on a hard tackle & had six teeth knocked out or broken against State in Jackson. Trotted back to the huddle, didn't even call TO. RIP Steve.

I brought up Steve and his popularity at Texas Tech. Since you posted this I wanted to mention that another of your former classmates Rex Dockery is who took over for Sloan at Tech. Sloan and Dockery recruited and coached one of my good friends from my high school there at Tech which is why I paid attention to Tech football in those years.

I remember Rex. Also another good guy. He was a year ahead of Steve's class. He played at U.T. (the original one). I think Steve would have also gone to the Vols, but for Bowden Wyatt and his devotion to the single wing. That caused the Vols to miss out on another good Tennessee Q.B. that year from Kingsport. You may have heard of him also. His name was Steve Spurrier. Those misses cost Wyatt his job.

When he was at Alabama he came across as the all American boy with a strong work ethic. and class. He was a sucessful player, coach and administrator. College football could use more men like him. Condolences to his family and may he rest in peace.

Vanderbilt fans knew him. He was a good coach at VU.

I remember reading an interview with him where he stated he regretted leaving VU.

The '74 VU team that played in the Peach Bowl had;

Head coach
Steve Sloan (2nd season)
Offensive coordinator Rex Dockery (2nd season)
Defensive coordinator Bill Parcells (2nd season)

I am late to this conversation, and I echo all the gracious comments about Steve Sloan. I was a student at Alabama at the time and remember how highly regarded he was, both as a player and student leader. He also excelled in academics and was a member of the prestigious Jasons, a highly selective men's honors society. By the way, the Jasons still exists but is no longer officially recognized the University because it ran afoul of Title IX.

I remember Sloan basically being run out of Tuscaloosa when he was the AD because he actually had the AUDACITY to say that Auburn should be allowed to play their home games wherever they choose.

I think your fandom might be making you misremember a little bit. You see, most Alabama fans who are old enough to remember are more upset with the fact that he blew a chance to hire Bobby Bowden over Bill Curry in 1987.

Are you serious Clark?

Apparently, you MISREMEBER that Curry and Sloan were hired AT THE SAME TIME. Why in the hell would uat fans be upset with Sloan about Curry?

What does the fact that bama fans were upset that y'all didn't hire Bowden over Bill Curry have to do with the entire bama fanbase losing their mind when Steve Sloan actually stated that he didn't understand why there was a controversy over where Auburn could play their home Iron Bowl games. He said that Auburn had the right to play their home games wherever they choose. That comment was the beginning of his demise as AD.

You appear to be old enough to remember the situation. Are you really going to try to pretend that what I have posted is not the truth?

I think you're fandom is causing to you ignore the truth.

When one cannot defend the truth, they resort to trying to make fun of the messenger.

Steve Sloan Resigns

"Sloan, however, was criticized by some Alabama fans for his handling of several issues, including the signing of a contract to play rival Auburn at Auburn for the first time ever this year"

Care to respond to the article posted loser?

I give Steven Sloan a lot of credit for seeing the future and cranking up the Bryant Denny Stadium renovation. He was reading the tea leaves for what it was. Pat Dye wanted out of Legion Field and BAMA soon followed. Bryant Denny was ready.

But missing out on Bobby Bowden for the second time was an incredible blunder. I don't really think we had much of a shot at it after Coach Bryant's death, based on Bowden's own comments, but we certainly did the second go around. That one was all on BAMA.

Do you really consider waiting 11 years to play in Bryant Denny SOON?

In no way was Bryant Denny Stadium ready to host an Iron Bowl in 1990 (their first home Iron Bowl game after the Auburn home Iron Bowl game).

Why did they wait so long to move the game?

It was for two reason:

1. They saw the huge economic and recruiting benefit that both Auburn University and the city of Auburn gained from having the Iron Bowl in Auburn and wanted the same for uat and Tuscaloosa.

2. Bryant Denny Stadium was FAR from being ready in 1990, but was finally ready by the time their Legion Field contract expired.

FWIW, I will give you guys a lot of credit for what y'all have done with your stadium. I honestly think it is now one of the nicest and esthetically pleasing stadiums in the nation.

I know many here will not accept that compliment as they try to pretend the complimenter is not telling the truth about why Sloan resigned.

Did you see Bryant Denny before the 70,000-seat renovation by Sloan? What are you trying to argue?

I was sitting in the stands in Legion Field in 1992 on Thanksgiving Day and watching Pat Dye coach his last barner game in the Iron Bowl. (17-0 BAMA) I understood the politics of the time. BAMA was ready to move when they were ready. The fact that Sloan was changing BDS from its 2nd tier showcase was still a credit to his forethought.

Yes I did, hence the compliment on the changes made. What are you trying to argue? Why did you choose to ignore this part of my post?

Seriously, are you really going to try to pretend that you guys did not try to do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to prevent Auburn from moving the Iron Bowl to Auburn?

I stated in the very beginning that Sloan was part of the sensible, intelligent people that knew that the Iron Bowl should be played on campus. That is why he agreed with Auburn about moving the game from Legion Field. He could already see the great benefit that your school and city would gain from doing so. I gave him credit from the very beginning but your minions want to deny the truth and mock the messenger.

Keep your heads in the sand....
