in 1972. Tennessee defeated Penn State, 28-21.In a strange scheduling quirk the two played each other in the season finale in 1971 with Tennessee winning, 31-11. This was Penn State's first game of the year so they had two straight regular season games against Tennessee. The losses to the Vols were Penn State's only regular season losses in 1971 and 1972. This was also Condredge Holloway's first home game and in addition to the first night game, the first game with capacity over 70,000 as the new SW Upper Deck was finished giving Neyland 70,650 seats making it the largest on campus stadium in the SEC.

Back then, Neyland was considered one of the most beautiful stadiums in all of sports because of the way it looked out onto the Tennessee river. Bit of a shame that the upper deck wraps all the way around now, blocking that view.

I've heard that the lights were added over the offseason specifically for the game because Penn State didn't want to play in the hot, humid early-September environment.

I wuz there in the best and worst seats I ever had. I got seats on row 1 or 2 in the student section. Great, right? Not good, because the cheerleaders were on a platform right in front of us and blocked our view throughout the game. It was still fun, as we beat PSU in both of those games - no lights in '71, and under the lights in '72.
