Joe Kines ran that garbage 4-2-5 for a couple years under Sherman. It was terrible.

Wilcox seems to like the scheme (Boise State, Tennessee and UW). He did well with it at BSU - a lot has to do with the players.

Of course, as we saw last year, 3-4 was the superior defense. Look at the SECCG division winners

It's easy to make a SECCG when you go 1-1 against the ONLY two teams you play.

Like someone said we run the 4-2-5 but it is rumored that we might start putting in some 3-4 packages. Nkemdiche is a 3-4 end IMO.

Na he is more of a 4-3 dt.

Joe Kines

Solid DC. Probably didn't have much of a chance with A&M having such a young defense that faced good offenses week in and week out.

I think there is such a talent disparity in college football, the only truly good schemes are the ones that exploit difference makers. Without difference makers, your defense will be anemic and stale regardless of scheme. A&M had Von Miller a couple years ago, the best defensive player in all of college football. It wouldn't have mattered what they ran as long as they were putting him in position to make plays.

He seem more like a 3 technique guy so you could use his natural athleticism and disrupt life in opposing team's backfields.

Bama plays with 5 DB's more than 4 LB's in most games now. If anything the base is a 3-3-5 and a 3-4 on running downs.

it was my understanding that bama plays with an 8 jack linebacker base set

LSU's base is a 4-3. It changes play to play depending on down and distance or opponent.

Against a&m last year chavis started in 4-3, manziel ate it up. Tigers went to a 3-2-6 from the second quarter on and held them out the endzone till about a minute or so left in the game.

Against bama LSU played it's base 4-3 with nickle and dime packages as needed. Besides bama's two 2 minute drives the tide had 10 possessions in their regular base offense.

They had six 3 and outs. Punt
Two possessions ended with fumbles.
One had two first downs and a punt.
One resulted in a TD.

If your DC has a scheme he believes in and the hosses to play it. That scheme really doesn't matter.

SPEED SPEED SPEED and MORE SPEED doesn't hurt. Chavis will always play SPEED over size.

Man State had some pretty fricking salty defenses under Kines.

Yeah, I was really surprised to see the DL weights for LSU prior to the Cowboy Classic. For all the talk of size, it really wasn't the case. Although I will say the size that I saw was in the Secondary. Simon, Claiborne, Reid, etc., were bigger than a pro-type db.

Actually, Bama's nickle package is a 4 DL scheme with an even or flex front. Here is a link to an explanation that Saban gave of his defense before last year's BCSCG: LINK

USC is still running a base 4-2-5.

Thanks for the link. That is more of what I was looking for. Flexibility is the name of the game in today's CFB.

LSU will run a version of the 3-4 at times as well.

So LSU will run 4-3, 3-2-6, and 3-4.

Don't think we run a 4-2-5 often at all

When LSU goes to a 3-4, what personnel are they using?

Tenn reverted back to the 4-3 this year.

Tennessee under Dooley actually tinkered with the 7-1-5 a little back in 2010, but didn't have any success.
