Makes sense for Missouri to be middle of the pack in coaching salary since they were middle of the pack in FB
Oh wait

Sumlin is getting a raise to somewhere in the $3.2-3.6 mill range and an extension. Just waiting on the BoR approval.

Underpaid:
Mark Richt, Georgia: $2,811,340
Nick Saban, Alabama: $5,316,667
Will Muschamp, Florida: $2,474,500
Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M: $2,436,000
Overpaid:
Gary Pinkel, Missouri: $2,700,000
About right:
Les Miles, LSU: $3,751,000
Steve Spurrier, South Carolina: $3,550,000
Dan Mullen, Mississippi State: $2,600,000
Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss: $2,000,000
Not sure yet:
Bret Bielema, Arkansas: $3,200,000
Butch Jones, Tennessee: $2,900,000 (approximate)
Mark Stoops, Kentucky: $2,200,000 (approximate)
Gus Malzahn, Auburn: $2,300,000
Freeze can move up to underpaid with an 8 or 9 win season. Mullen can move down to overpaid with a 6 or 7 win season. Richt is probably the most underpaid relative to his record of wins. I think Saban is also underpaid relative to the value he brings with championships. Spurrier is probably underpaid but I am hesitant to move him up to that category without a better signature win.

and then blew out nebraska in the championship game. The big 10 isn't the best conference but BB is currently more proven than any coach that came to the SEC from the ACC, Big East, or any mid major conference.

Add about $1.2 Million to that for his current salary after the raise.

He's doing really well in recruiting thus far. If that produces within the next couple seasons he may very well be underpaid considering the circumstances.
Belle, I was only basing that on the fact that UK has never paid as much for a coach as they are for one who has never been a HC before.
My impression is with what I have seen so far, is that he is well worth the money they are paying him, and if successful in a couple of years he will get raises quickly from where he is today.

If I were UK I would have gone after a Sun Belt coach. Lots of good, emerging teams in the Sun Belt filled with talent that was just short of the SEC or transferred from SEC programs. I'm not sold on the Stoops brothers not named Bob.
The best option would be to back up the Brinks truck and go get a real up and comer but UK doesn't seem to want to take football seriously for some reason. Go get Sonny Dykes for instance, he is a good fundamental coach that runs an Air Raid that would at least be entertaining to watch. There really is no excuse for Louisville to have a superior football program to UK.

quote:Your AD handled your coaching search pretty damn well too. In the wake of the BP fiasco, the hiring of JLS, the way the season unfolded, etc. the angst towards Jeff Long was monumental from your fanbase. He kept a cool head through it all and he took his time and ignored the shite from the fans and made what I think is a damn good hire.

Call me crazy but I think Spurrier is underpaid. Built Florida and now building USCe to new heights. He should be 2nd behind Saban who I also believe is underpaid.
