It was super easy to end with ties as well. There was a 3-way tie in 1989, for example - Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee all ended with 1 loss each, to each other:
Alabama beat Tennessee
Tennessee beat Auburn
Auburn beat Alabama

Ah, the good ol' days.

BAMA was originally declared SEC champion after the 1961 season on the basis of their 8-0 conference record while LSU had a 7-0 record. Later they were declared co-champions

They were both SEC champ since both had the same win percentage.

As I posted, after the 1961 season BAMA was declared the SEC Champ on the basis of more wins. Only a few years later did the conference recognize LSU as the Co-Champ that season.

Do you have a source for this?

That was actually a helluva season to be a fan of these 3 teams. Ahhhh...the Cobb-Webb at Tennessee was pretty freaking awesome.

ETA...of course, I forgot that UT kicked Cobb off the team the week of the Bama game.

I feel like that is a terrible way of determining a champion though.

That was the way it was done for everyone in Division I-A/FBS until the SEC introduced the conference championship game in 1992. Had Alabama lost that game I doubt you would have seen conference expansion happen the way it did. Because of the success of that game, the Big Eight and Southwest Conference combined to form the Big 12 in 1996, the ACC expanded to 12 teams in 2005, and the other major conferences had all followed suit by the beginning of the last decade.

And Alabama of course got the sugar bowl invite.

It went solely by record, which means some years you'd have ties. In 1989, Auburn, Bama, and UT tied for the title. And if you tied, you were fully within your rights to claim SEC champ for that year.

They didn't do "head to head" tie breakers then.

It was percentage though, not win/loss. Which is why Bama won the SEC outright in 1972 even after Punt Bama Punt (they played an extra conference game against Vandy).

The bare played that extra conference game for years. Most schools played five conference games and bare/bama played six. He knew a 5-1 conference record was better than 4-1. Back then the conference wasn't nearly as powerful/structured as it is now. He pretty much ran the conference.
