My thoughts and observations:

Pros:

He's more comfortable in the pocket than Shaw was. I think he has a really nice, quick drop back from under center and gets the ball out fast. Has above average arm strength, is more decisive on intermediate routes, and is more elusive than given credit for when the pocket starts to collapse.

Cons:

Tends to start off slow, and that can snowball if the guys around him don't step up early. Gunslinger mentality; he's much more apt to force a ball down field rather than check it down, throw it away, or run for the easy yards if they are there than Shaw was.

Conclusion:

I expect this offense to be more reminiscent of Spurrier's glory days at Florida. More under center formations to take advantage of our running backs and take pressure off him, and he has enough weapons around him in the passing game to make things happen. If he can manage the games better and the team buys into him, he'll have a very successful season. I think he'll put up close to 3,000 yds passing, but he'll definitely have a higher TD/INT ratio than Shaw did.

If you want game material to look at:

Clemson or ECU 2012 were his best games. Missouri 2013 was by far his worst game. I really don't think he played bad early on, but there were a number of dropped passes that he put on target, a few fumbles, and he never really got into a rhythm. You could also see how the offense responded better when Shaw came on in relief. They played with much more heart with Connor leading them.. will they do the same for Thompson?

He's a pocket passer, not the runner Shaw was but not many QBs are. He will tuck occasionally, but because of depth you're not gonna see it that often. Good arm strength. Struggles some with accuracy, but hopefully that's improved. Very humble and eager to learn. Apparently way more of a vocal leader than Shaw was, which is good to hear for when this team gets tested, and they will be tested. A lot. We have lots of receivers and a well stocked backfield, with a veteran OLine. Don't expect the same offense from last year. I'm predicting a 60:40 pass happy scheme... but that number will vary depending on Thompson's accuracy early on. If he's inaccurate, expect more balance and lots of run. If he's on target, expect the Fun N Gun.

LOVES JESUS...... Like, a lot.

Went to Israel with a fellow OLineman... I'm assuming they were spreading the gospel.

To be honest with you, I'm equal parts excited for this year and absolutely terrified for this year..
