Saban’s fear of retiring

Preseason behind the scenes part 1

quote:

Keteyian asked about Saban’s future coaching through the lens of Bear Bryant. The legendary Alabama coach died at 69 just weeks after retiring as the Crimson Tide coach. “There’s a lot of things that I’d like to do,” Saban said. “What would I enjoy doing? What would I like to do? I have no idea. You’re kind of fearful of the fact that … what if I’m not self-fulfilled and I still had years left to do this?” Saban continued his answer with a look back. “Hey, we all have insecurities,” he said. “When I was a kid, I used to close the closet door in my room because there’s a monster in your closet, you know that. So, you never know what’s behind the door. That’s always a little scary. I think it’s the same thing like you’re talking about with Coach Bryant. I feel the same way.” Saban is tied with Bryant with six national titles and he spoke about the motivation to return from last season’s disappointing ending.
quote:

“Coaching is not a job,” Saban said. “It’s a way of life and as long as I feel like I have the energy to do it, which I do, I’m excited about having the opportunity.”

The funny thing though, is that some losses can really drain your energy and 44-16 was not a step in the right direction.

Does it make me a lazy loser that the idea of my own retirement—especially with someone like Saban’s nest egg—makes me woozy with glee? I simply cannot relate to his trepidation.

Yes and Saban said the same thing. Bye this was in response to an autobiography by Bear Bryant. They read an excerpt from the book and asked Saban to respond. I think coaches regardless of their success. Level hate to quit at the end. It’s no different than retiring from a company after decades of service. That job begins to define you. What and who are you if you don’t have that job?

When he eventually does retire there will probably be celebrations on many campuses especially SEC west universities, UGA in the east.

This is what I know, on his deathbed he's not going to wish he spent more time in the office but more time with his family.
