A rare chiming in from me... Brian or others can confirm, but this is kind of an older story from what I heard a couple weeks ago.

The version as told to me was that the two ADs spoke briefly and there was mutual interest, but the SEC is trying to find more uniformity in their P5 scheduling which kept any talks from getting serious. And even then Tennessee probably wouldn't have done it anyway with OU on the schedule too. The conversation didn't go anywhere and I'm actually very surprised it's even a story now. It's really a non-event.

Had Tennessee scheduled Baylor they would have had 10 P5 games (2 P5 OOC) and the rest of the conference only 9 (some with 8, working on their 9th P5 as an OOC). So I can see where the SEC stands on this.

As much as we'd all love a narrative about the SEC wanting their teams to avoid Baylor, it's really not what happened.

FWIW, I'd love to go to a game at Tennessee. Fantastic atmosphere. Two great stadiums for a home and home. Maybe down the road we can make it happen.

That's it then case closed.

Tennessee can make it to 6-6 playing shitty schools while knowing they/the sec is afraid of them to play Baylor. Good job butt chuggers

Makes sense. I thought it was far fetched that Baylor would try to schedule a P5 team.

It always seemed unlikely we'd schedule 2 B12 teams to open the season but this would be a great future game to schedule. Even so I would like to see UCLA and ND scheduled again - those were fun.

The whole thing was bull shite, and now the Baylor mod who reported it is starting to catch heat over publishing bad information.

I guess that's why we play Oklahoma next year and y'all play Fresno State. You can't be this bad, you just can't.

Were you really worried about perception here? Not wanting to play two upper-tier B12 teams in the same regular season was a perfectly valid and acceptable reason to nix such a game, and most reasonable people would have agreed.

That's the entire point.

There was never a game to "nix"

Yes, I got that. But the tone of your post sounded very much like you were glad for the vindication. My point was that you didn't need vindication even if the story had been true.

It would've been vindication for the SEC, as the story stated the SEC office nixed the game, not Tennessee. The Baylor writer was really reaching with this one.

I'd agree with you on this 9 out of 10 times. This was the 1 time that got under my skin enough to show what was reported was false, and had no merit.

Which is true. Still, nobody can accuse UT of being cowardly in its scheduling, what with OU, Oregon, UCLA, ND, etc being mixed into its OOC play over the last decade. So I was just saying it's a non-story either way, because anyone trolling UT over the issue (that was apparently a non-issue) doesn't know CFB very well.
