No they didn't. That's always been the rule at our stadium. It's agreed upon before the games

It has been the rule. What bothers me about this is the outfielder threw his hands up just like they told them to do before the game if the ball goes under the chair and hes looking right at the umps. The umps don't react, LSU is still running the bases so he takes over and reaches under the bench. The umps should have called the timeout when the outfielder through his hands up. This was the umps not being prepared for the situation and Rice paying the penalty.

He also didn't just reach for the ball. The right fielder grabbed the ball and shoved it further under the bench. He wasn't reaching for the ball to try and make a play.

It was a tough position to be in no doubt! The ump was sprinting, however, to make a ruling. I doubt they could have stopped progress of the runners by rule. Tough break for sure!

I don't consider it a tough break. If the right fielder doesn't shove the ball further under the bench and the ball was under the bench when the ump gets there it is a ground rule double. Right Fielder brought it in himself. Unless the ball wasn't under the bench and that is why he shoved it under the bench. In that case it wouldn't of been a ground rule double.

So, what you're saying is the right fielder fricked it up then. You don't raise your hands to signal the ball is out of play and then reach for it, period. You stand there and wait for the umpire to come and make a ruling, even if it takes them a while to get out there.

If the ball was indeed out of play, the umpires will reset the baserunners accordingly. The specifics of what is considered a GRD ruling are explained to every away team before every game, or series. The right fielder messed up. It's that simple.

Graham, the Rice HC, said post game the umps made the right call. He said this specific ground rule was explained to the players in their pre game briefings. And this was not Rice's first game playing under this ground rule. The ground rules are explained before each & every game.

Wait, you think the umpires should have stopped play to check and see if the ball was lodged under the bench? Are you legitimately retarded? That's not how this works.

What happens if the umpire stops play, runs out there and determines the ball wasn't lodged under the bench and is still in play? Does he just yell "play ball!!" And everyone starts running again? Are you familiar with how baseball works?
