Patrick White was a hotshot qb in high school. Highly recruited. Was coming to LSU but switched to West Virginia at the last minute when he found out Saban wanted to convert him to a db . Well, he got to hot dog around at WV and do quite well.

Then it came time to go to the pros. Check out the wikiepedia link to see how he turned out.

Hmmm.... Saban might actually know how to evaluate talent.

So white didnt make it long as a pro QB like 95% of the other QBs coming out and this is proof Saban is always correct?

How are all the Saban QBs doing in the NFL?

Mack Brown was the best

IIRC, he wanted to play Cam and Johnny at positions other than QB

He recommended Houston Nutt replace him at LSU.

Saban sure does have more DB's in the NFL so I would say the odds are higher that yes he would of been able to make some money in the NFL has a DB. 100% lock no, but who really thought White would be successful in the NFL, no one.

Another example was Saban taking Derrick Henry as a RB when everyone else told he him no. UGA said they would give him a scholly but only as a LB. Several teams said he was too big to be a RB. I guess he rubbed that one in.

Every SEC school wanted Philip Rivers to play defensive back.

Sometimes you're just wrong and it is made very obvious later on.

I wouldn't consider Saban telling a recruit to go away if he wanted to play QB who ended up being a 2nd round NFL draft pick as a QB to be that genius of a move though.

How have Saban QBs fared in the NFL? How is that even relevant to Saban's main job, to recruit productive college players? White was awesome in college. Not sure what this post is supposed to prove

This is why the whole NFL bust thing makes no sense to me. Saban's job isn't to make sure he puts the best players in the NFL. Any college player who thinks that their coach isn't looking out for the university's football program first and foremost is fooling themselves. The NFL success of former players is just a plus.

I agree to an extent. The only real reason NFL production is relevant is for recruiting purposes. It is a huge sell for high school kids to show the players you've put in the league and how well those players are doing. However, I think it's pretty clear that regardless of how much merit there is to the "Alabama bust" theory, it doesn't hurt Saban in recruiting one bit.

Ya, that is a good point but I think that takes care of itself if you are winning NCs. Has there ever been a CFB dynasty that didn't produce a lot of NFL talent?

His Bama QBs? 3 of the 5 went to the NFL and all three played at least two years.

That's not all that impressive, if we're being honest. In his career at LSU and Alabama, Nick Saban has produced a total of 5 NFL starts. 3 by AJ McCarron, 1 Greg McElroy, and 1 by Matt Mauck. Not that it matters really. (didn't include Jamarcus Russell with him being a crossover between Miles and Saban)

Saban also had Antonio Gates at Michigan State, but Gates wanted to play football AND basketball. Saban told him football only and that football was his best shot at the next level. Gates transferred to Kent State I believe and played both. Seems he has been fairly decent as a TE for the San Diego Chargers.
