Anyone who eats grits with salt and pepper isn't a true southerner or else they are a transplant to the south and have no clue what is going on.

Or, perhaps their family transplanted to the south generations ago and passed down thru the family the northern "salt and pepper" way to eat grits.

Any true southern old timer will tell you that grits should be eaten one way and one way only:

with Butter and Sugar or Syrup. Sweet grits.

I saw this when I lived in Kinston, North Carolina. Old timers taught me to eat grits with bacon and syrup or with butter and sugar.

They said only yankees eat grits with salt and pepper.

One thing is for certain: Grits literally sucked arse with salt and pepper. No taste. By adding butter and sugar, grit were super tasty.

A lot of butter, some salt, pinch or pepper and I use bacon as the spoon. Born and bred in the deep south.
