Your numbers look like they're from the 2000 census.
Had you followed the link, you'd see they came from the 2014 estimate on wikipedia, except for the Mississippi schools which weren't listed

ATL metro 5.5 million
Nash Metro 1.7 million
So yes, these stats are highly deceiving

They must be pulling in a lot of small towns somewhat near Tuscaloosa for it's MSA to be that large. Seems much smaller than that. I travel there every couple months for work. Not that big.

Last time I checked Bryan was contiguous with College Station.

Surprised Auburn has that many people. I'm guessing BR became a lot more populated after Katrina.
Does this take into account the population during the school year?

Fayetteville metro is over 500k, but most of it is 20 miles north. Over 20 years, we've flip-flopped from being the big town of a small metro, to being in the smaller county of a medium-sized metro. Fayetteville has grown, but the cities to the north have grown faster. Fayetteville is still overwhelmingly a college town. Kind of a unique situation.

It depends on how the census tracts are set up.
If a university is in a separate entity from the city, then the on-campus population isn't reflected in the city numbers. I know all of UA campus is inluded in the Fayetteville city limits officially. I think Ole Miss is officially in a separate census-block from Oxford, so their on-campus numbers officially wouldn't be in the total.

MSA's are deceptive.
EBR Parish has about 450,000 people in it. Livingston Parish and Ascension Parish have about another 250,000 together, and at least half of those people drive into Baton Rouge daily.

And ATL being larger than Nashville Is crazy to me, they must not be factoring in some portion of the suburbs in because ATL traffic is a hellscape of people.
ATL is the 8th or 9th largest metro in the country. 2/3 of the population of Georgia lives in the metro. He's only including the city itself, which is tiny in comparison to the actual metro.

If you are counting Atlanta you need to count Houston as well at 6.18 million. It's 60 miles from B/CS and is the metro next to the B/CS metro.

Ummmm... Atlanta hosts the SECCG. That's why it's listed, I think.

There are 15 cities on that list you dolt. Atlanta isn't being assigned to a school.
