Ranking FBS teams on the quality of their victories

Hello SEC fans, I thought you might find this fun to look at as the season progresses.
Last year, on a Colorado football forum, I brought up the subject of ranking the FBS teams based on a quantitative value of who they beat. At that time, somebody made a smart-a$$ comment of 'Sounds good, why don't you do it'. Well, I have for this season. The ranking is based on collecting points determined by the FBS teams that the team you have defeated has beaten. For example, Colorado picked up 1 point for defeating Colorado State (CSU). CSU had a value of 1 because they beat Oregon St. in week 0. As CSU wins more games against FBS teams over the course of the season, then the value of beating CSU increases.
Right now, Georgia sits tied at the top with Southern Cal with the most FBS points.
I'll be updating the stats on a weekly basis. Enjoy.

Didn't look. But South Carolina must be far down the list.

If 19th is far down, sure

Seeing Florida, Kentucky, Arizona State (2-2), and several others ranked ahead of Alabama on this scale makes me immediately question its validity. Might need to do some tweaking of the system.

This is essentially the imperialism map - or at least the same idea - but in ranking form.

No Auburn. List is shi...

If an FBS team is not listed, it is because they have yet to defeat an FBS team who have themselves beaten an FBS team. They have yet to earn any points.

Another fake news thread only to inflate Georgia's ranking. They haunt done shite, it will play itself out though

No, not a fake thread to inflate Georgia. I really am a Colorado fan. My personal opinion is that Alabama is the best team in the nation. I just wanted to put something together that is quantitative. Like you said, by the end of the season it will play itself out. With only 4 weeks of data, and many teams playing cupcakes in those first 4 weeks, the data spotty at best. I'm just curious to see how close this method maps to the polls for the last few weeks of the season.

Not exactly... if I understood correctly, the distinction is that if you beat a team, their future wins are earning you points as well. Bama is of course hurt by FSU looking like a flaming dumpster fire with a bad OL and a replacement QB - not to mention the 2 canceled/moved games.

I feel like it is a little flawed early in the season. Why don't you also get the points for the team you beat?
For example, Syracuse (1.0) is higher than LSU (0.8) because Syracuse got the points for beating CMU who beat Kansas, but LSU only gets points for beating Syracuse who beat CMU... Why not also give points for the team you beat? So in this scenario, LSU would have 1.8 (1.0 for Syracuse and 0.8 for CMU) and SU would also have 1.8 (0.8 for CMU and 1.0 for Kansas).
But what do I know, I'm just a guy trying to get my team ranked higher in a random poll.
ETA: shite, LSU would actually have 2.8 for beating BYU, but still it makes sense.

Likely will adjust itself once Bama gets into the meat of its schedule... (and/or when FSU stops shitting the bed).
The idea in theory makes a good bit of sense... how good are the teams that you beat, and how good are the teams that they beat... doesn't penalize for losses beyond not earning additional points...
Not sure I buy that the scale is perfect... there are likely some computer algorithms that do this a bit better, but it's interesting at least.

Just as a heads up, you mistakenly have Louisiana Lafayette having beaten Texas A&M in week 3.
But I do love the effort. I imagine in a couple more weeks, once conference play gets into full swing, it will really start to produce some telling results.

Thank you UAtide11 for pointing out the mistake in the Texas A&M vs. Louisiana Lafayette score. I have made the correction and that change will impact the week 4 results and beyond.
I also agree that it will take a few more weeks to have meaningful data. I'm looking forward to seeing how the standing look compared to the polls from about week 8 and beyond.

If anything it inflates S.Carolna. You guys are what you have always been. Not much. You guys were good under Spurrier and had some good years in the 80's. More times than not, below average.
