The trip isn't a problem. The way Gabe has described the place over the years, though, they run out of food quickly - particularly rib tips, and I'm still not sure what a rib tip is. That makes me think it is smallish and there's no way I'm getting in there on a game weekend. Am I wrong?

If it's not raining, I'd take in the tailgating scene. You'll be greeted warmly with plenty of food and drink and hospitality.
The area around Reed Arena (basketball stadium) is a great place to start.

I've never been on a game weekend, but they do run out of food in my experience. They do daily specials and that's what the rib tips are, I want to say they are the special for Saturday and another weekday

By Reed, down John Kimbrough, work your way to Cain Park, Simpson Drill Field, and finish in Spence. Tailgating Olympics.

To eat I would go with Fargos, Chicken Oil, or Torchys. If you are coming in from Austin or San Antonio I would make the trip up to Lexington on your way in and hit Snows BBQ which is the best in the State and only open on Saturday mornings till its gone.
To do the Northgate scene with the Dixie Chicken is always fun. The Bonfire Memorial is cool but somber. The Bush Library is great if you like museums and have an appreciation for the Bush 1 Era and the Gulf War, takes an hour or two. The Memorial Student Center is a nice hangout spot across from the stadium and you can see the 8 Medals of Honor earned by Aggies. The Sam Houston Corps Center has a pretty cool gun collection if that is your thing. March in with the band and Corps happens 90 minutes before the game and is a spectacle. The prettiest part of campus to walk is in front of the Academic building, not far from the stadium.
Of course if you just walk around Reed or Spence you are likely to get invited in for a free beer and food at someone's tailgate, we are friendly to visitors (unfortunately our football team has been too friendly lately).

Mad Taco is also very good. Owned by Maddens.

With all the recent rainfall, there is shitload of exposed petrified wood all over Bryan and C-Stat.
We had fun following a creek out there finding pretty pieces for the flowerbeds back home. The most fun I've ever had in C-Stat.
Only take a couple, though - cuz I'm pretty sure it's illegal to take it.

There's something strange about someone from the world's largest unwalled penitentiary, Oklahoma, describing College Station as dry dusty tundra. Maybe he was in Lubbock and forgot where he was.

Not really. One campus is beautifully landscaped and full of trees that have been a part of the campus for nearly a century. The other is a hideous, oversized, dusty old barn in the middle of BFE that had to plant trees along the roads to keep students from slitting their wrists while they're in school there.

My sister goes to OU and they do have a pretty campus. Congrats!
Auburn fans: like many have said Ags are very friendly and will invite you to drink and eat. Any and all are welcome at our tailgate in Cain Park. It may be wet out but we'll be getting hammered like the good lord intended

It's been like 12 years since I lived in CS, but the last time I visited we had a good time at the Corner Bar.

Bar hop on northgate, then check out the tailgates

I find it hilarious that someone from a state that only exists because they literally had to give the land away is talking smack. There are definitely some unattractive parts of the A&M campus as it is huge at 5200 acres and we are slowly recovering from our Soviet Style architecture boom of the 70's and 80's. The old buildings and the new are all beautiful. The sports venues are top notch. We have some gorgeous parks as well.

Is it beautiful? No. But you're throwing stones at other people's landscape from the ultimate glass house of Oklahoma. C'mon man. Pick your battles.

You really should arrive on Wed and bring your entire immediate family and extended family. College Station is a true national treasure. The world famous museums, the 5* restaurants, the seemingly endless options when it comes to the arts and entertainment make spending only a couple of days in CS impossible, if you want to take it all in. The campus architecture is the most beautiful in the country. Lastly, you will need a full day just to tour the Aggie trophy room. The sheer number of awards for national championships in football, basketball and baseball will confound your expectations.
