I can tell you how it was done. They did what we used to do in high school.

My team played at a National Guard Armory, and combat boots on drill weekends do not help a basketball floor. There were a few dead spots and we of course knew where they were. Force a ball handler over one and the ball does not quite bounce back like it does on the rest of the floor. Very small effect but enough.
