I wouldn't call him "lengedary" and I'm sure ol' Sonny himself wouldn't refer to himself that way.But Sonny slowly built a competitive program at Auburn.
Honestly how Sonny got to Auburn in the first place is 30 for 30 material or at the very least the version that the SEC Network has now. After Auburn fired Bob Davis after the 1977-1978 season they hired Paul Lambert from Southern Illinois.
During the summer of 1978 Lambert was across the state line in Columbus as part of either a basketball camp or coaching clinic for HS. Unfortunately he died in a motel fire the day the camp had concluded. Soon after Smith was hired.
