Defensive players dominate list
1. Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville
2. Jonathan Allen, DE, Alabama
3. Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma
4. Dede Westbrook, WR, Oklahoma
5. Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M
6. Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
Outside the conversation:
Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson
Jake Browning, QB, Washington
Jabrill Peppers, LB/RB/PR, Michigan
Curtis Samuel, RB/WR, Ohio State
Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State
Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama
1. Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville
2. Jonathan Allen, DE, Alabama
quote:
The Alabama defense has some of the best players in the nation at their respective positions so singling out one top player is difficult, but Allen deserves the national attention. There’s a formula in place for defensive candidates to get noticed for the Heisman, including a great team record, a Heisman “moment” or two, and of course, touchdowns. We’re putting Allen here because of much more than his two defensive touchdowns, but they will hold some weight if the national voters are going to pay attention to him as a legitimate candidate. We’re putting Allen on the list because his 92.3 overall grade leads all interior defensive linemen and his 94.8 pass rush grade is by far the best grade at the position by a wide margin. He’s lined up all over the defensive line for Alabama and disrupted from all angles with six sacks, seven QB hits, and 27 hurries on only 242 rushes. He’s the top player on the nation’s most dominant defense and his two touchdowns are only icing on the cake that has been the best defensive performance in the country through eight weeks.
3. Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma
4. Dede Westbrook, WR, Oklahoma
5. Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M
quote:
The top-graded edge defender by a hair over Tennessee’s Derek Barnett, Garrett has battled through injury this season with little drop-off in production. His 89.5 pass rush grade ranks second among Power-5 edge rushers as he’s picked up four sacks, a nation–high 11 QB hits, and 20 hurries on only 198 rushes. His disruption as a pass-rusher has never been questioned, but Garrett has taken his work in the run game to a new level this season and he now ranks third among edge defenders at 87.7. Garrett’s chances to win the Heisman are slim as defensive players need to push 20-sack seasons or score random touchdowns like Allen, but if looking at Garrett’s body of work on a play-by-play basis, he should still be a part of the conversation.
6. Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
quote:
Right there with Garrett (since 2014), Barnett’s 90.6 overall grade is just behind Garrett’s 90.9. Barnett has actually graded better as a pass-rusher at 91.5, which is best in the nation among edge rushers. He’s gotten to the quarterback with six sacks, nine QB hits, and 21 hurries on 206 rushes while also adding an interception on a tipped pass and a pass defensed on a downfield throw. Barnett’s run defense has been strong at 80.3, and he’s even had a few “Heisman moments” (strip sack in the end zone against Georgia) along the way to keep Tennessee competitive, and he’ll need plenty more to contend for the award, but like Garrett, his every-down impact should keep him in consideration.
Outside the conversation:
Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson
Jake Browning, QB, Washington
Jabrill Peppers, LB/RB/PR, Michigan
Curtis Samuel, RB/WR, Ohio State
Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State
Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama
quote:
Two sacks. No interceptions. It doesn’t matter. Foster has been the nation’s top linebacker by a wide margin, grading at 92.5 overall. He’s been a force in the middle of the Alabama defense, providing 89.5 play against the run while grading similarly in coverage at 87.8. The lack of flash plays keep Foster under-the-radar, but he’s been as consistent as it comes with only two missed tackles and few blown assignments this season.

They were talking about Allen being in contention last night on Sirius XM.

tRant strongly disagrees.

2. Jonathan Allen, DE, Alabama
Dude is a monster.
But lets be real. Jackson ran away with this award already.

After about 7-8 games people felt the same way last year.

Love that they are putting some emphasis on defensive players, but this is why PFF gets laughed at sometimes:
3. Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma
4. Dede Westbrook, WR, Oklahoma

And it has happened several years like that. Usually there is another guy you can point to and say he's good too and his number are fantastic. Who can we say that about this year? The have defense players on this list.

Id love to see a defensive guy win it but Lamar Jackson is running away with it....literally

Unless Allen starts returning punts or playing TE in goal line situations, the award will go to a QB or RB like always.

He's going to need 15+ sacks and 3 TDs in a year where he doesn't face someone like Jackson.

Jackson has that thing wrapped up. No offensive guys really shining bright enough on the other top teams. Glad some of these defensive guys are being recognized though.

Not sure you should include Dede Westbrook if you're going to laugh at PFF. Dude has been incredible this year. Baker's been ok, but not as good as last year IMO.

Allen is phenomenal and deserves to be in the conversation. The award sucks though because while Allen could be the best player in the country he simply only has a chance to get invited.

This is the only person that plays defense that has a real shot.

Jesus Christ.... you're dumber than they are if you think Jonathan Allen has a shot in hell at a Heisman.
Doesn't belong in any kind of conversation for it.
Jonathan Allen:
35 tackles
6 sacks
2 TDs
Arden Key:
34 tackles
8 sacks
3 forced fumbles

Leonard Fournette. Quote me on this after the ceremony.

Jackson has video game stats and will likely win the award. LOL at having 3 defensive ends in the top six. That's laughable.
Cook's having a better season than folks realize, but they lost a couple games so he's out. Same thing with Fournette, but he'll have a shot to shine against Alabama in a couple weeks.

Unfortunately Jackson having this kind of season is a fluke, and he will not be a productive qb in the NFL.

I don't know if he can catch, but if he can, he'll be quite the swiss army knife for an NFL team. His elusiveness is better than anyone I can recall. Like Reggie Bush at USC but better.

I know you're just trying to troll and all.
I'll bite, Key is a good player but he's more of a specialist. Allen is an everydown, dominate force, and is much better than Key.
The 2 TDs are a huge plus for him also he plays interior on the DLine which is a much harder position to get sacks from due to the constant double teams.
Allen would make Keys his bitch and break his skinny arse in half .

Leonard Fournette isn’t in the Heisman Trophy race — yet
quote:
One big question to come out of LSU’s win over Ole Miss on Saturday night was whether or not Leonard Fournette’s performance puts him back into the Heisman Trophy race. It’s an interesting takling point, and one which could have more validity as the season progresses. However, the simple answer as stand in late October is “no” — not yet, anyway.
