Peyton Manning would have dove on the ball. He'd be dead now, but ...

he would've dove on it.

Actually, he probably wouldn't have.

He was terrified of getting hit by Von Miller again

He would have been like Petey in dumb and dumber if he did have to dive in there.

I mean, the ball did come out like he was anticipating and he dove for it then. It's not like he was standing back with his hands in his pockets.

LOL probably not. But his age gives him more of a pass.

Honestly, looking at those Denver defenders, I would have just straight given them my lunch money after the first quarter.

That was the game though. Denver gets in fg range getting that fumble. If Newton recovers that they still have a chance

That was awful and he won't live that down

I will not defend the piss poor press conference.

But I do not buy the whole he was scared to take a hit. He was taking hits all night. He was the running offense as well taking some hard arse hits.

It is just me, but if anything he looked indecisive. It was a bad mistake, but I just do not buy he was scared of getting hit.

It was weird. Cam has proven time and again he will mix it up with the defense. He's the best running QB in the NFL and he does some of his strongest work punching it in himself from the goal line. He is not afraid of contact.

That's what makes him backing away from that fumble so bizarre. It was the game and the ball was right. there.

Probably just a brain fart. And he is going to have to win a Super Bowl to be free of the stench, I'm afraid.

You can buy whatever you want. But it looks horrible. That was the game. The super bowl. The reason you play. You got to try to get that fumble. People are having fun with it on here but IMO the hits got to him

Which is compounded by the fact he talked about how scary and tough he was

But he did dive once the ball bounced out of the defender's grasp. When things are happening at game speed perhaps he anticipated the ball coming out again after the first dive.

Doesn't matter. The story is set.

Pretty much, that it is.

I think he just screwed up.

If you watch him play, it is not like he is afraid to get hit.

And that did seal the game, but I do not think they were going to drive the field anyway. Denver was playing too well on defense. Short of another freaky turnover, I am not sure how Carolina could have won. Their line was beat all night. The false starts seemed to happen a lot because they knew they were about to get beat before the ball was even snapped. Denver was amazing at stuffing the run too.

I am happy for Peyton, and do not really watch that much NFL --- usually only the playoffs. I would think Carolina spends the off season looking for a guy like Julio to make huge difference.

That's an awful explanation, though. Unless there's something extremely mitigating -- soaking wet field or something -- you don't anticipate the ball squirting out of the pile. You do your damnedest to make sure you have a shot at it and, if necessary, force the ball out of the pile. You don't wait and hope the ball will shoot out in your exact direction. That's Bad Football 101. When I played in HS, the first and last rule our coach gave us was "Never give up on the ball. Ever."

Do I wish he was more humble?

Probably, but I think that is a generational thing.

Long term, he is going to have to start handling it better. He also has to start minimizing the hits he takes if he wants to have longevity. The quarterbacks who lasted the longest always seemed to learn that lesson.

He's so tall I think he was too close. He backed up a little and was starting to go for the ball when it squirted out words the goal. He went for it then but it was too late.

I hate making excuses for Cam but that makes the most sense.

I remember Elway diving head first for the first down marker in the superbowl and getting clobbered. Dude put his body on the line for a win.

Cam could have had that moment tonight and he backed down plain and simple.
