I agree, unless they hire Howland, they're basically hiring another Gonzo.

The only thing about Howland is in the SEC he seems destined for action by the NCAA. Not like a fact, more like a gut feeling.

I agree, my point was that he would be the only proven coach on their list.

It is a bit frustrating to see a school that has many things in places others will never have and they do not act like a team wanting to elevate their status. It is not like their are tons of schools that can build a 20K+ venue.

Too true. I live 20 miles from campus, thus, I get to see this madness firsthand.

They have never even been to a Final Four. Before Pearl they were NOTHING. We are a better school than them.

The issue is filling out the SEC in basketball. No reason the SEC should not get at least 4 teams and possibly 6 in the dance. ACC and others pocketed at least 20 million this past NCAA and that is not just bus money.

UK and UF can gets checks for the SEC, but you need volume for the money to roll in like floodwaters. So I look at it as as a "who's next" issue than just a single school or fanbase issue.

Who are say #3 - #6
Vols have facilities and fans
Hogs have venue and history
Dores have potential to return to glory
Tigers (LSU) just need to get back on track
Mizzou needs to get to a Final Four and multiply their "solid" fans
Tide is a darkhorse but needs to break through to another level

Georgia, Auburn, TAMU, Ole Miss, State, and Cocks all have deeper holes to carve out a spot from.

For the decade or 2 that the ACC was the lead dog, it is not like all those ACC teams were making it to the top. It was still pretty much the UNC and Duke game but the ACC pocketed a whole lot of dough from the teams riding them into the post season.

Correct, but neither has Missouri and the atmosphere in TB > MA

Here you are just showing your youth. I was around when they were good. Granted it has been some time, but the old days at Stokley were electric. Anybody who was there back then can tell you this is a true statement.

Not to go too far off topic, but the question might not be it they have the money, but where it goes. Since they third partied the tickets to IMG it sure seems like the fans were cut out and the scalpers were given the keys to the kingdom. It sure feels like the mod where IMG is the one skimming off the top.

Tennessee actually has to deal with something no other university in the SEC or nation has to deal with. The city of Knoxville has an entertainment tax on Football as well as Men's and Women's Basketball. Yes, we're actually taxed by our own damned city. This tax was levied a long time ago and no one paid much attention because we were so flush with cash but former AD Mike Hamilton ran our finances into the ground - bad buyout deals and general mismanagement. Now, we're broke and that tax on every single ticket is killing us. One of the reasons Dave Hart is looking to schedule more neutral site games is that we can make more money playing at a neutral site than we can playing home-home because of that damned tax.

This tax also costs the university rental $$ as some musical and other acts avoid TBA to avoid the tax. So while the IMG skim is hurting everyone we're getting skimmed by our own city.

Get this shite:

quote:

The tax dates back to state legislation passed in the 1940s and applies only to Knox County. The law has since been whittled down with exemptions over the years and now largely targets movie theatres outside the central business district and regular-season college athletic events in Thompson-Boling Arena and Neyland Stadium.

"We're the only entity in the state that pays this tax — I'm talking about university athletic programs," said Chancellor Jimmy Cheek. "Vanderbilt doesn't pay it, University of Memphis doesn't pay it, ETSU doesn't pay it. It's a state law that affects only Knox County."

5 percent of every ticket you've ever bought for a football or basketball game at UT goes to pay the city of Knoxville - you're effectively paying Knoxville taxes.
