Kentucky fans are good with this. No more $33 million dollar buyout or lifetime contract. It was time to move on.

But it puts UK in a tough position. Y'all mostly wanted Cal gone but not enough to tell Cal to go. The buyout is meaningless to programs of this size.

There’s a general understanding that Cal was looking to leave so Barnhart waited it out. Why pay the buyout if the guy has an opportunity to go elsewhere?

I guess we'll see how much there is to this if UK gets a homerun hire very quickly.

That's part of the point. It's very much about the trend.

In the last five seasons he's never made it past the round of 32 with one of the most perennially talented teams in the country.

And it is what it is. At some point, players also have to be held accountable. See Arkansas this year and last year. Very talented rosters, but for whatever reasons the players did not do their part.

The guy has a proven track record and likely still has 5-10 years of coaching left in him. He has taken 3 different programs to Final Fours. Won a title at Kentucky.

At Arkansas, he isnt going to get lambasted by not making a Final Four every year. Do Arkansas fans want a Final Four? Sure, but not making one every season isnt going to have fans screaming for his job.

See Matt Painter as an example...He has been at Purdue for 19 seasons...8 of those seasons he did not get past the second round...Do you think their fans care about that this morning? Absolutely not. After the 2015-16 season, Purdue could have sent him packing after 11 seasons of pretty mediocre post season success...or missing the post season all together...

So saying a coach is done after having lackluster tournament draws/games the last few years is pretty short sighted...

A $33M buyout is far from meaningless for any basketball program, it's BASKETBALL, not football. Even UK basketball doesnt bring in close to what top football programs do and top football programs also wouldnt just scoff off a $33M buyout for the most part.

Heck, using UK's own 2022 financial athletcis report. UK football brought in almost $49M in revenue, UK basketball only $31M.

Everybody was laughing because Arkansas lost their coach to USC, but now that Kentucky is on the hunt for a new coach, everybody is not laughing so much. Kentucky going after your coach is not a fun thing.

I think you're forgetting that paying a full buyout happens almost never.

Depending on who we hire and if we lose recruits to Arky it might reset us for a year, but I do think a fresh start for all sides is good here.

I hope the Board throws a lot of money at Drew/Stevens/Donovan. I don't think Jay Wright is coming out of retirement.

Here is the real issue. Given that Cal is doing Kentucky a big favor in so many ways, was his buyout negotiated downward, or is Kentucky going to play hardball? And what is that number?

Buy Cal a motorcycle and edit his face above a certain neck brace after a ride through the countryside.
