Steele is a proven commodity too. Save for one bad game he has been consistent. His 3 years at Clemson show that.

I think it is a mirage. By October it will be a clear cut divide.

And I think QB play will be the obvious thing that makes the difference. That's why Ole Miss and especially LSU aren't going to finish near the top, and A&M/Auburn have a legitimate chance to overcome Bama's front 7.

If I had to pick one team to crawl to the top it would be Auburn. I like the way their schedule lays out for them and if it comes down to the Iron Bowl for all the marbles they have a good shot.

As tough as the West is likely to be I could also easily see Auburn being very middle of the pack. Going to be an odd year.

I will, however, predict that the bottom couple of teams will likely find themselves in bowl games against direly over matched opponents and absolutely detonate them like Arkansas did to Texas.

LSU has been playing with no QB forever though. All we have to do is ride our defense and running game. We got to a national championship on the backs of Jefferson and Lee in 2011. I think Ole Miss needs a good QB because they lack an elite running back.

Seriously, don't sleep on LSU. We've been hearing very very very good things out of camp.

I think LSU will be pretty good this year. It will be interesting to watch the SECw this year.

All I'm saying is you're defense can ill afford to regress due to your offense.

Our offense was prolific in 2013. We lost every skill position player off that team for 2014 so of course they went through growing pains. Our offense will be much better this year.

Dude. Mississippi State is not going to be good at the beginning of the year. You're setting yourself up for a huge disappointment if you expect State to run away from LSU. State got the benefit of playing against a gutted defensive line and a completely new offense last year.

Basically our entire offense is back and the defense only lost 3 starters.

If this were true, the previous SEC champions would look like:

2014 State
2013 UGA or LSU
2012 UGA or A&M
2011 Bama
2010 Arky (if they still had Mallett, I can't remember)

It's all about a great defense with a physical, time management offense. Hence why the SEC champ is probably going to be Bama, LSU, or Arkansas

Book mark this shite, please. I did not say we would run away from LSU. But I think we will pull it out at home. Our offense is loaded and we will have a better scheme and a lot of vets on D.

I'm not saying we win the game, but a few things are hard for me to discount. I don't think you are going to stop us from scoring, Dak has more weapons this year than last, the offense will be hard to slow down. I have a hard time seeing you guys keep up if we are scoring effectively. Lastly, Dak is potent when healthy, and while early in the season may be the best time to catch our defense, it is by far the worst time to catch our offense. Mullen's offense really has shown a trend to fall off a little as the season progresses, but it's dangerous when clicking.

It really depends on how Les game plans. If he tries to wear down our D Line and rely on the defense like I suspect he will, he is playing with fire. That investment only works if you keep Dak off the field, which is hard to do unless you're giving up big plays, which obviously is just as bad.

I'm not saying these opinions are correct, but that's the way I see it right now. I can see it going either way, but that's honestly just because I am 26 and sadly haven't grown to expect a win against LSU.

ETA: I think LSU will be very good this year. But I do like when and where we play. Our offense is a tough one to break in a new DC on. Really excited because it's going to be a season defining game one way or the other.

The last time Kevin Steele was a Defensive Coordinator.

2009.

Georgia Tech vs Clemson. Clemson leads 27-24 after kicking a field goal with 11:33 remaining. Georgia Tech gets the ball on their own 14 after the kick off. Georgia Tech then picks up 4 1st downs, including a converted 3rd and 9 and 3rd and 1 to move in to field goal range. The kick is good. 27-27. Clemson's offense punts and Georgia Tech receives their ball on their own 35. The Yellow Jackets then pick up 2 1st downs, including converting on 3rd and 11 to move in to field goal range. The kick is good. Georgia Tech wins. Final score 30-27.

TCU vs Clemson. Clemson is winning 10-7 entering the 4th quarter. Kevin Steele gives up a 5 play 56 yard drive to give TCU the lead. It would remain unchanged as 7 of the next 8 TCU offensive plays were rushes that chewed up the clock. TCU wins. Final score 14-10.

Maryland vs Clemson. In a game where Maryland went 7 of 14 on third down before the 4th quarter began, they were able to run out the clock and hold the score. Maryland wins. Final score 24-21.

ACC Championship Game. Also against Georgia Tech. Clemson retakes the lead with 6:11 remaining on the clock after a TD that made the score 34-33. On the following possession, Georgia Tech gets the ball on their own 14. They then engineer a 13 play 86 yard TD drive where Steele's defense let Georgia Tech picked up 6 first downs. Georgia Tech wins. Final score 39-34.

2010:

Auburn vs Clemson. Losing 17-3 at half, Auburn rallies in the 3rd quarter. A TD drive with two converted third downs cut the lead to 7, an 8 play, 72 yard drive tied it up, and a 78 yd TD pass gave Auburn the 7 point lead. Auburn wins in OT. Final score 27-24.

Miami vs Clemson. Jacory Harris dominated the day. His 4 TD passes were not only a season high, but a career high. Miami wins. Final score 30-21.

UNC vs Clemson. UNC leads 14-10 entering the 4th. With 14:50 left, they march down the field in a 14 play, 76 yard TD drive, converting a 3rd and 9, 3rd and 7 and 4th and 4 along the way. After Clemson scores a TD to put themselves back in the game with 5:31 remaining, UNC attempts to run out the clock. On 2nd and 3, Kevin Steele's defense concedes a 13 yard rush, followed by another 10 yard rush. On 3rd and 9, UNC completes a 12 yard pass to pick up the crucial first down. Clemson takes their timeouts and the game is essentially over. UNC wins. Final score 21-16.

Florida State vs Clemson. Clemson leads 10-6 entering the 4th quarter. FSU gets the ball and marches down the field in a 12 play 85yd TD drive, converting 2 third downs along the way. With 0:53 seconds remaining, Clemson kicks a field goal to tie the game 13-13. After the kickoff, with under a minute left, FSU methodically rips apart Kevin Steele's coverage and easily makes it in to field goal range. Florida State wins. Final score 16-13.

Meineke Car Care Bowl. USF vs Clemson. USF takes a 31-13 lead with 13:58 remaining. They run the ball on 10 of their final 12 plays so chew the clock to seal the victory. USF wins. Final score 31-26.

2011:

Georgia Tech vs Clemson. Georgia Tech converted 7 of 14 on third down to win a game that was basically over at half. Clemson scored a TD late to make it closer than it appeared, but it wasn't close to being enough. Georgia Tech wins. Final score 31-17.

NC State vs Clemson. NC State score 27 in the 2nd quarter to completely demoralize Clemson before the second half even started. NC State wins. Final score 37-13.

South Carolina vs Clemson. Converting on 8 of 18 3rd downs on the night, South Carolina hadn't completely put away Clemson entering the 4th. With 13:48 remaining, the Gamecocks only lead by 9 points. To rectify the situation, South Carolina masterminds a 14 play 50 yard FG drive, converting 3 different 3rd downs including a pivotal 3rd and 6. After a South Carolina TD that shortly followed, Clemson had too much to overcome. South Carolina wins. Final score 34-13

Orange Bowl. West Virginia vs Clemson. Kevin Steele conceded 70 points to a Big East team with a month to prepare. 6 TD passes, 10 for 16 on third down, and 595 total yards later... WVU wins. Final score 70-33. Kevin Steele is fired.

Can you think of a previous season where the SEC West had this much parity between all the teams in the division?

In 2010, everyone but Ole Miss finished with at least 9 wins. In 2011, we had 3 teams finish in the top-5. But from top-to-bottom, this does look like the strongest the SEC-W has ever been.

I still find the 2010 standings incredible:

Auburn 14-0
LSU 11-2
Arkansas 10-3
Alabama 10-3
MSU 9-4
Ole Miss 4-8

MSU 9-4 Won Gator Bowl (by 38)
Ole Miss 4-8

Post season confirmed, with Arky's loss to a 12-1 Big 10 champ OSU by just 5 being the only loss, that the teams weren't just strong by virtue of their schedule. AU won the title, and the other three wins were by a combined 97 points (average margin of victory over 32 points).

That's insane.

Alabama will miss most of its offensive production.
Arkansas loses defensive starters and has a brutal road schedule.
Auburn loses offensive starters but replaces them with adequate guys. Their defense should improve. Offensive line looks good.
Ole Miss has an inconsistent QB and no running back.
Miss State loses all of their starters basically and will get abused until they grow up.
Texas A&M loses a ton of offensive line experience and their secondary/LBs are still garbage.
LSU has no QB yet and we lost some starters on defense and our amazing LT.

Sept 12th is going to be a rough day for you my friend.

Arkansas and MSU have no shot. The rest have a shot until we find out if they actually fixed their problems.
