Year (pre-1939).........School.........Source

1934 Wyoming..........Helms Athletic Foundation
1935 LSU..American Legion Nat'l Championship
1936 Notre Dame.......Helms Athletic Foundation

In 1935 Atlantic City hosted a national basketball event. The Louisiana State Tigers were invited to face Pittsburgh in the American Legion Bowl, in a game touted to be for the national collegiate championship. The Tigers won the game 41-37, and were determined national champions based on the win.

Many schools claim or recognize pre-tournament era national college basketball championships by virtue of being selected by third-party selectors, such as the Helms Athletic Foundation and/or American Legion including: the University of Kansas, Purdue University,Stanford University, the University of North Carolina, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Wisconsin, Syracuse University, and Washington State University.

In addition, in some years teams won playoff series or tournaments played on the court for a national championship. For example, LSU was named the 1935 national champion by virtue of winning the American Legion Bowl game against Pittsburgh in a match-up of regional powers.

You are certainly welcome to step inline with other LSU fans and claim something that is not really true like Alabama fans do. And, you can keep the banner hanging. But, you really lose the right to call Alabama out if you do.

I really don't really care which way you go so don't take it personally. But, I am not changing the widely recognized list to add LSU due to the factors I stated in a post above in addition to:

1) LSU is the only school to ever claim that the American Legion Bowl was the basis for a national championship. Basically, LSU won a basketball game in the last game of the season called the American Legion Bowl, and that is pretty much it. You can't really with integrity say you won the national title based on winning an invitational game when you are the only entity who says it.

2) You posted text that is very similar yet significantly different than the text that is online in at least one place. LSU claiming is different than being named:

"Many schools claim or recognize pre-tournament era national college basketball championships by virtue of being selected by third-party selectors, such as the Helms Athletic Foundation, including the University of Kansas,[17] Purdue University,[18] Stanford University,[19] the University of North Carolina,[20] the University of Pittsburgh,[21] the University of Wisconsin,[22] Syracuse University,[23] and Washington State University.[24]

In addition, in some years teams won playoff series or tournaments played on the court for a national championship. For example, LSU claims the 1935 championship by virtue of winning the American Legion Bowl game against Pittsburgh in a match-up of regional powers.[25]
