The ole HBC is headed back to Neyland one more time ... this time for an award being handed-out up there.

Steve Spurrier coming back to receive Neyland Award

Steve Spurrier, who beat Tennessee with three different schools at Neyland Stadium, will receive the award given in honor of the stadium's namesake.

Spurrier is the 2016 recipient of the Robert Neyland Award, presented by the Knoxville Quarterback Club.

Brent Musburger is the 2016 recipient of the Lindsey Nelson Broadcasting Award.

Both will be honored the weekend of Tennessee's Orange and White Spring Game, April 15-16.

Spurrier won at Neyland Stadium with Duke (1988), Florida (1994, 1996, 2000) and South Carolina (2005, 2011). He retired from coaching in October at South Carolina with a career record of 228-89-2.

Spurrier, who played high school football in Johnson City, also won the 1966 Heisman Trophy as a Florida quarterback. His 1996 Florida team won the national championship.

He coached three years at Duke, a perennial doormat, going 20-13-1 from 1987-89.

In 1990, Spurrier returned to his alma mater and went 122-27-1 in 12 seasons through 2001. From the inception of the SEC championship game in 1992, Spurrier's Gators represented the East Division seven times in nine years before he left to try the NFL.

After a brief and unsuccessful experiment with the Washington Redskins, Spurrier returned to the SEC East at South Carolina in 2005. He went 86-49 in 11 seasons, winning 11 games for three consecutive seasons from 2011-13. The Gamecocks made their only SEC championship game appearance in 2010.

With 131 SEC wins, Spurrier ranks second behind Paul "Bear" Bryant.

The Neyland Award has been presented since 1967 in memory of UT's all-time coaching wins leader from 1926-52.

Musburger has been a household name in broadcasting since 1973. The Northwestern graduate has covered virtually every major sport during his career, first with CBS and later with ESPN and ABC.

He has been a fixture in college football coverage, most recently with the SEC Network.

The Lindsey Nelson Award has been presented since 1998.

Spurrier and Musburger will receive their awards at a Saturday brunch hosted by the East Tennessee Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

They will be recognized later that day at the Orange and White Game.

The honorees will also attend a Friday dinner at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse with the Knoxville Quarterback Club. Tickets are $52 for the 7 p.m. dinner. Reservations can be made a rivermontfarms@msn.com

Yet went out in flames losing the last 2 games he ever coached against UT and quit mid season the next year before he could go out losing 3 straight against Butch. BUTCH JONES

I can promise you I got more joy out of his retirement announcement knowing he was going out a loser against the Vols than most.

You have a great start to your Monday though baw

Steve Spurrier will always be remembered as a salty old man who needed a mulligan to get his first and only national championship.

Says the Bama fan...

Never mind the fact that Spurrier at UF was competing with FSU and Bowden who finished 13 straight years in the top 5.

Never mind the fact that Spurrier routinely coached circles around Saban.

Funny how things come full circle. His first trip to sanford he set a stadium record, his last trip to sanford he had an NCAA record set against him that will likely stand for a looong time.

And by greyson f'n lambert of all people.

I can see that.

GREYSON LAMBERT. I still can't quite wrap my head around that one. If you had shown me after the SC game some film from his october/november, I would have said it was CGI.

More likely dropping by to bend Phat Phil over one more time for old time's sake.
