Olde -- adj., archaic
(Colloquial) contraction of 'olde' -- 'ol'e'

Hence, Ol'e (Ole) Miss

In the early part of last century, a nickname for LSU was the 'Ole War Skule' because of the number of officers and generals it had provided to the U.S. Military (third in the nation only to West Point and Texas A&M.)

Also LSU used to officially be Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College. They might still be.

In pretty sure that is EXACTLy where it came from. Some history department professor there even verified it.

Interestingly, the term "Ole Miss" is not derived from Mississippi, but was a term used by slaves for the wife of a plantation owner.

So it comes from slaves? Shocking.
