Ole Miss got too greedy too quickly

They should have started their pay for play operation with some regional studs and started gradually climbing towards the top 10 of the recruiting rankings over 3-4 years. Sell the Pastor Freeze angle to these kids even harder and make sure they use it in every interview and Freeze gets the Richt reputation.
Then you can gradually start offering some big money to the big fish.
How dumb does Hugh have to be to think that signing the #1 WR in the country from Chicago and #1 OT in the country from FL out of the blue isn't going to raise every red flag in the world?

Everyone in the SEC is doing 70 in a 55. Ole Miss blew by doing 115 while drunk.

The real problem is they needed the cheating to just have a moderate level of success and finally get double digit wins vs Bama all-time.
If I was an Ole Miss fan I wouldn't be depressed we got caught, I would be depressed that it took a level of cheating that the admin couldn't hide to get to a Sugar Bowl.

I think if those two Laremy Tunsil incidents don't happen then the NCAA investigation wouldn't have continued. I don't think Freeze would have signed Tunsil today if he knew this was gonna happen.
