the coach's religion should not even be in the discussion at a public university. Most practicing atheists are better citizens than your average christian. Mullen shouldn't be ridiculed if he is an atheist(which he's not) and freeze shouldn't be quoting the bible at his press conference. The bottome line is that Mullen's kids do a lot better job of staying out of trouble than most programs and they work their asses off with very little attrition. I am a christian and I wouldn't care if he was an atheist. I want to win football games and I want the players to represent my university in the correct manner.

Have to agree. I really hope we haven't stooped to that level, and I personally don't believe we have. Maybe a little shite talking, but bringing religion into it is just classless from a coach's perspective.

So you agree with me that this likely didn't happen? I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.

No. I am saying that something close to this did happen. I am asking you if it did (say Matt Wyatt was right) would you feel any different about Freeze or would you defend him for having done it?

Sherrill never calls Missisippi "Ole Miss," and the public criticisms he aims there are too subtle to stir the SEC office, yet they stab straight at the heart of Ole Miss recruiting. One of Sherrill's favorite lines is "When the National Guard was on the doorsteps of [the universities of] Alabama and Mississippi, black students were being admitted here."

Careful, Coach. State wasn't desegregated until 1965, after the riots that accompanied James Meredith's registration at Ole Miss in 1962, and following Governor George Wallace's ultimately futile blockade of the doorway at Alabama in 1963. But to the uninformed, Sherrill's line can pass as quite a lick on his two chief recruiting rivals, Alabama and Ole Miss. The greatest obstacle to Ole Miss recruiting, says Rebel assistant coach and top recruiter Jim "T" Thomas, who is black, is the memory of the Meredith episode in the minds of black families.

I wouldn't defend him. I think playing into people's prejudices (religious, racial, or otherwise) is low. I know dirty shite goes on in recruiting, but something like that doesn't sit well with me.

Shitty move on Freeze's part if true. Yes it was a recruiting tactic, just like if schools use OM racism as a tool against them.

Difference is, Freeze's remark is a personal attack, and that is uncalled for. Plus there is no evidence to back up Dan being atheist, and religion should be a non factor in recruiting anyways.

Everyone uses racism to deter recruits from OM, because OM has the history to back up that claim. But no coach calls OM coaches racist. Big difference in generalizing a school and a personal attack.

Beginning with Kentucky in 1966, the SEC slowly began to admit black football players. In 1972, Georgia, LSU and Ole Miss became the last of the league's teams to integrate. But even as Confederate flags were becoming more emblematic of virulent racism than of valor and mourning, the Rebel faithful continued to cling to their symbols. The school's history, to say nothing of the flags, left talented black football players (on which the other SEC members were loading up) less than eager to play at Ole Miss. The era of coach Johnny Vaught, who for more than two decades enjoyed a recruiting lock on segregated Mississippi—where it had been considered the duty of athletic white youths to play for the glory of the state's "way of life"—had finally ended.

The funny thing to me is when MSU brings up the race card all they do is continue the preception that all of MS is a racist place.

John Vaught didn't like black people. This is well documented. That doesn't at all disprove the fact that Sherrill LIED about Ole Miss and Mississippi State's histories when recruiting. In fact, the two are hardly related.

You asked for proof of that and you were given it.

Substitute Auburn for Ole Miss and Alabama for MS State in the OP thread title and this has been happening in the state of Alabama for MANY years with not only football recruiting but student recruitment. Auburn has played the we're the meek, salt of the earth, virtuous non-drug abusing righteous school while Alabama is a hard drug using, debauchery laden, heathen filled din of iniquity that chews young students up and spits them out.

What's apparently happening in Ole Miss/MSU recruiting sounds familiar.

I also love that you made no attempt to mention this was taken from another site and that these were not your words. What exactly would you do if people did not come up with this stuff for you to regurgitate?

In this case you would substitute Ole Miss for Bama and MSU for Auburn.
