When his teams start out fast and get a decent lead, he basically shuts off the offense and goes run, run ,pass.

That was my biggest issue with him. There several games where we lost huge leads and hung on in the end. It almost cost us against Texas and it finally bit us in the arse against AU in 2010. I think that changed his mentality because last season he was a lot more willing to step on the other team's throat.

I disagree about him being a bad motivator though. He may not be a big rah rah guy but I think he knows you can't be Houston Nutt every game and expect to win championships.

I think this is one of his major strengths.

I thought his in-game coaching was what most bitched about.

#1 has been clarified that he struggles motivating a team against opponents he views as inferior.

#2 should be clarified that he plays too conservative with a lead and people will point to the title games against OU and UT. Both of those games should have been remembered as huge routs solidifying his coaching prowess.

I'd qualify this statement to say he isn't a good motivator for inferior opponents.

That goes without saying. He doesn't need to motivate the team , that much, when Bama is playing a legit team. Bama doesn't need a motivational speech before playin Auburn.

Nicky was always pulling boneheaded stunts, only saved by the awesome talent he recruited.

Has Mike in Mandeville been asleep for the entire Les Miles era at LSU? Not to mention the 10 years prior to Saban's arrival at LSU? The 6 straight losing seasons we endured waiting for the magic to return?

Little Nicky is far from perfect and certainly has his share of embarassing losses but the butthurt is pretty strong in Mike's post.

You're right The BCSCG game against Texas was a prime example. Bama dominates the game but with 6 minutes left in the game, Texas had the ball, only down 3( with a true freshman qb) Or something close to that. I know why he does it, but you can't let a team get back up once you've drilled then in the face. Had Texas come back to win that game, it would have been a major mark against Saban. That's an of though. I understand him not wanting to throw the ball to give the opponents a chance for an interception or a pick 6, but don't shut the offense down all together. Bama had Julio, TRich, and Ingram. If you're dominating a team , one of the worst things you can do , is let your opponent start to believe they can come back.
Again, this is a good problem to have. It's better to sart out fast and slow up rather than to never get going like we did on Jan.9th.

Wasn't me.

I live in Beaverton, not Portland.

Maybe it was DucksFlyInPAC?

Not sure why the Duck fans would be butthurt about Saban though... maybe they're mad at him for blowing that 24 point lead to Auburn.

UT

A 16 point win is solid. The game is more of a blowout if Green doesn't blow coverage on 2 big plays. Why would Saban want to sling the ball around when UT's biggest threat was on the sideline?

While a great coach at LSU, Saban has improved as a coach since his time in BR. I don't think he's lost a game at Alabama to an inferior opponent. Maybe the biggest blemish while in T-Town is Cam's comeback? And even that loss was to the national champions.

I don't recall Saban making any more bonehead calls than Miles has. Just from a casual outside observer...
