This idea comes up every offseason, and it is dumb every offseason.

Relegate yourself to another board, because this thread is terrible, not fun, and probably has Face AIDS, which is a particularly vicious sort of AIDS, because it's OF THE FACE.

It's a lot easier if you group it by conferences, power 5 and not-power 5.

ACC/American
Big Ten/MAC
Big 12/Conference USA
PAC 12/Mountain West
SEC/Sun Belt

For a team to be relegated, it would have to have 3 or fewer wins for 2 consecutive seasons and a team in the accompanying division/conference would have to have 10 or more regular season wins for 2 consecutive seasons.

Over the last 4-5 years, the only real movement that would happen would be Marshall replacing Iowa State in the Big 12 and Northern Illinois replacing Purdue in the Big Ten.

The SEC is headed to a 20 team league as per the European soccer model.

Lighting in stadiums has adopted the European soccer model.

Sports events on TV show the score/time as per the soccer model.

Yeah, it will never work.

It's a cool structure but would be stupid for a sport where each player only has a 4 year career. Would be much harder to recruit to a lower division team would have to move up twice in 4 years to have a shot to win their division

Agreed. I think this would be a problem.

Personally, I'd rather see the NFL try the relegation/promotion model, though that will never happen either.

Not enough teams on the nfl for that.

Plus they'd probably have to get rid of the draft.

I actually think the NFL has too many teams. Two 16 team leagues is doable imo.

And why get rid of the draft?

Ehh I don't think 2 divisions of 16 is enough. I could maybe see 4 divisions of 8 with the top and bottom 2 getting promotion or relegation

As far as the draft, I don't agree with it to begin with. Teams ought to be able to negotiate whoever they want for whatever price they want.

But besides that, the draft encourages failure. It why we hear slogans like "suck for luck". With this format teams for have an increased incentive to win and without the draft it would eliminate the incentive to lose.

Fair enough. 4 of 8 also works.

I agree with you about the draft. I wasn't asking to be a smartass, I was just curious what your take was. I think there should be consequences for sucking, which is why I like the soccer model.
