True, but I always like to reinforce my knowledge with statistical evidence

As always A&M's admission rate and 10% #s are skewed due to the stupid Texas law the forces A&M to accept everyone in the top 10%. Which I guess can mess with test scores as well. I mean why would I give a shite what my SAT or ACT score if I get auto accepted by being top 10%?

One of my tenants' sons did something similar. Transferred to a far weaker HS in order to jump into the top 10% to get into Texas on scholarship. Failed out the first year (last year) and is taking HCC classes only to be readmitted in the fall with his scholarship.

Lots of 5-star, elite talent and then filling in the gaps with local in-state no-stars.

FIFY

But seriously, Bama has been doing a fantastic job of bringing in very high scoring out of state kids. I think I read somewhere that around half of bama's freshman class in 2013 was OOS.

Over half the university is from outside of Alabama now.

% in Bottom 50% of HS Class
1. Florida - 0%
1. Tennessee - 0%
3. Georgia - 1%
3. Texas A&M - 1%
3. Vanderbilt - 1%
6. South Carolina - 6%
7. Auburn - 12%
8. Missouri - 13%
9. Arkansas - 14%
10. Kentucky - 15%
11. Alabama - 17%
12. LSU - 18%
13. Mississippi State - 19%
14. Ole Miss - 25%

This is why I'm not fretting too much over TOPS being cut back. Much of that 18% needs to go to college elsewhere, or not at all.

We have a lot of OoS kids too that can't get into their in-state schools

Yep - it was. My sister's pledge class (freshmen in 2014) was something like 66% out of state kids.

I'm fine with the lower end ACT scores. I like growing to a point (where they are now seems like a nice max), but you have to continue to serve your state.

I'd like to see percent instate/out of state numbers.

Doesn't say too much but would just be interesting to see.

Bama has a lot of very elite programs that undergraduates can gain admission to. We had a placement program economics that placed freshmen smarter than me into our field projects. It was incredible.

Edit: a little too easy to find out who that guy is.

The Vandy number would be very low they recruit nationally and get mostly 5 stars.

Alabama's Breakdown of Students
Alabama - 36.1% (13,013)
Georgia - 7.5% (2,703)
Texas - 6.2% (2,235)
Florida - 5.7% (2,055)
Tennessee - 4.7% (1,694)
Illinois - 4.2% (1,514)
California - 3.9% (1,406)
Virginia - 2.8% (1,009)
North Carolina - 2.5% (902)
New Jersey - 2.1% (757)

That's just nuts. Completely different than even 10 years ago. 1 in 10 kids on campus is from Illinois, California or New Jersey. I knew 1 person from those 3 states combined when I was there over 4 years.

4.7% of the people on that list are traitors and should be treated accordingly!
