Please do a search for Reformation Period. No guilt then, don't see why Catholics should feel guilty now, when its only a game, not thousands of people being tortured, burned alive or drowned. Of course that's just my opinion. Thanks for asking.

The Catholic Church came up with a book ranking the best Catholic Universities in the country and they didn't include Notre Dame on purpose. That goes to show you. I hate those $%^&*^%^&. Think their so much better than everyone else. I'll NEVER root for them, even if that means rooting for Alabama

Hey, this guy is right.

Why Catholics have this silly sentimental attachment to Notre Dame is beyond me.

Catholics in America have never been persecuted at any time in American history.

Never.

Ever.

That's why I'm pulling for the University of Alabama to beat Notre Dame.

Bama faculty and students have never persecuted anyone. Ever.

Alabama is the most hospitable state in the entire nation and always has been since day one. Catholics, Jews, blacks, etc. have always been welcomed with wide open arms.

Fun fact. Texas A&M has more Catholic students than Notre Dame.

And there are more Catholics in the state of Alabama than the Vatican. A&M's enrollment is over 50,000, ND's is only about 12,000. I'd be willing to bet a lot of money LSU has more than ND, too, since they have more than 26,000 students in a largely Catholic state. But what's the percentage?

<Rushes to Google>

Old article (2003) but it's fairly high percentage:

quote:

Notre Dame’s undergraduate population has remained about 85 percent Catholic for years. To accommodate the mostly Protestant minority, Campus Ministry compiles and annually updates a list of churches and synagogues in the area. Although Notre Dame does not offer transportation, many of the churches offer to pick up students on campus.

As for this thread, it of course makes sense there are Catholics that cheer for ND just because it's a Catholic school, but it also makes sense if you don't care about ND at all, even if you're Catholic. In fact, I probably cheered for the Irish to lose more than win before I decided to go to ND. I don't think it really matters too much.

Raised Catholic. Mom's side of the family loves the Irish. My Dad and I hate them. I know plenty of Catholics who are turned off due to the expectation that if you are Catholic you should be a ND fan.

It really doesn't.

But I appreciated the OP because I've got to think that I'm far from the only Catholic who has that little voice inside me that makes me feel guilty for wishing any ill to Notre Dame football.

Even though it really doesn't matter...

Raised catholic, but now I'm effectively atheist. Therefore, I can only find it in my heart to root for the bammers. Apologies.

I never had that. The vast majority of the Catholics I know from back home cheer for Ohio State and I did, too, in my youth. No Catholic guilt and nobody really cared. The priest even would say "Go Bucks" a few times at the end of Mass before big games and our parish even sometimes had OSU gamewatches, never ND ones.

I think it might be a little different in the south (outside LA) where much less of the population is Catholic and the vast majority is Protestant.

Outside LA indeed.

Plenty of closet ND fans in Louisiana that used to come out of the woodwork when ND was doing well and LSU wasn't. The bandwagon was large.

The Indy Bowl when we played ND was a lot of fun for that reason. Well, that, and our coach at the time played for the '73 Notre Dame team that beat Bama in the Sugar Bowl.

But yeah, if LSU plays Notre Dame again I have no conflict at all about who I'm pulling for. But there's no hate for Notre Dame. It's not like Ole Miss where I want to see them stay in hell for another 40 years.

I did not grow up in the South and was not an Alabama fan until I attended school there. Notre Dame was the first team in sports that I ever hated. Hearing about how great they are at every family gathering really gets old, especially because my family has no affiliation to ND other than being Catholic.

Over the past few weeks, it seems like every other person I see in Baltimore is wearing Notre Dame gear.

Not saying auburn doesn't have them, but this is funny coming from a bama fan. Nothing about you, as you said you attended.
