new Orleans is on the east bank. it is very confusing due to the massive bend in the river where the city sits. for example, to get to the west bank you cross the bridge driving almost due east. most people use directions like up the river or down the river as opposed to north or south because the river bend distorts those directions and makes getting around confusing.
