Is easily the best system based on our current situation.

SEC West team: Auburn or Bama
SEC east team: UGA or Mizzou
ACC tam: FSU]
PAC 12 team: Oregon
That's two SEC teams plus two likely teams hat deserve it. The selections will look a lot like this every year.

6 teams
Top 2 get byes, but must have won their conference. Unless there are not at least two conference champs that are worthy of getting in.
Winning a crappy conference shouldn't trump great teams that play in better ones.
No Notre Dame clause either.

This is how it should be right now and how I imagine the playoff will look within a couple of years when they get the logistics taken care of.

If we had it this year.
FSU, Auburn, Stanford, Mich State?

More than 4 fricks the regular season. Don't think so? Imagine this scenario..... Alabama is undefeated, coming off 2 Nattys and starring a one loss Auburn team in the IB. It's a given that Alabama is in the playoff regardless if they win or lose. Also, just like every coach, Saban has a nice bonus in his contract if he wins another Natty.
Do we witness, arguably, the great college football game of all time, or does Saban follow the example of the pros, and sit his key players?

I would like 12 teans. Top 8 conference chsmps. 4 at large teams. Top 4 conference champs get the bye. Play at the home of the higher seed until the semi's.

We all know eventually it will expand from 4 teams, but where would the nuber of teams be satisfied to get a system that would end the debate.
no such number exists
some years just two teams would be adequate to have a meaningful championship winner... more commonly there is legitimate debate between the #1 or #2 ranked team.
the best that can probably be done is to have some sort of system with truly defined criteria.
