And then we'd lose 5 down the stretch. No, gracias.

Let's not lose sight of the good news, the kicker is back on track! Seven points, no misses. The death threats can be shifted to the offensive coordinator and the secondary and return specialists.

I'm tired of every other series Bama throwing the deep ball. The QB's are not accurate past the intermediate pass and the deep ball has not connected all year. I have no idea where Bateman was going with the pass that was intercepted Saturday night, no crimson jersey around. They need to get back to the run as their bread and butter.

Which is expected, given that we've only played two games.

The more revealing statistic is passing yards per game, where LSU ranks third from last.

Here's a simple fact: LSU will not win the West if they continue to average less than ~100 passing yards per game.

Agreed, Saban needs to reel Kiffin in a bit, short to intermediate passes(slants/passes in the flat/ to TE's etc) to keep the D honest (especially with Henry etal in the backfield)...

I was really worried about Shotty taking over for Bobo but he's done a great job & hasn't tried to reinvent the wheel. Just playing solid pro-style O & letting the talent do the job...

Lane should be scheming to his talent & let the 5*'s eat... JMO...

The fact Alabama has 19 more passing attempts than Cal and Jared Goff absolutely blows my mind.

Found this on another board. It shows how stubborn Lane is

quote:

What exceptional circumstances? Us completely panicking when there was no reason to?

Look at the drive chart from the game...

1st Qtr

First drive (down 3-0): 3 runs, 3 passes
2nd drive (down 3-0): 5 runs, 5 passes
3rd drive (down 3-0): we opened up with 4 straight runs for 20 yards...but over the final 9 plays of the drive threw it 6 times and ran it 3. 13 play drive that only resulted in 3 points because we got cute.

2nd Qtr

First drive (tied 3-3): run by Drake followed by Bateman pick

(this was...in my opinion, the sequence that changed the game. They scored a TD after the Bateman pick and then we fumbled the kick and they scored again. Went from a Bateman interception at 3-3 to being down 17-3 before we touched it again. still, though, ample time to come back.)

2nd Drive - 10 of 15 plays were designed passes, one of which turned into a Coker scramble. Henry touched the ball twice on a 15 play drive and averaged 7.5 yards on his two touches. We know he wasn't tired at this point because we hadn't had the ball in nearly 20 minutes of real time. Despite the score, we're entering panic mode with the playcalling here.

3rd Qtr

First Drive - 5 of the 7 plays were designed passes. Again, we're only down 14 at this point with an entire half left. But we're throwing it like crazy.
2nd Drive - 3 Coker passes. Punt.
3rd Drive - at this point, we're down 20 and entering full pucker territory. Still, the run is working.

Derrick Henry touched the ball two times on designed runs in the entire 3rd quarter.....twice. Incidentally, he gained 31 yards on the two carries, all of it coming on one play.

4th quarter

First drive - Henry touches the ball on 4 of 6 plays and we score in less than 3 minutes. SURPRISE!
2nd drive - 3 Coker passes and a pick....where did Henry go? (This drive started with 12 minutes left, btw. Still PLENTY of time.)

From this point on, we had to throw with no other choice. Until the final actual drive that I mentioned, where we had plenty of time to be balanced and threw deep anyways.

Moral of the story: when we commit to Henry touching the ball, good things happen. When we commit to throwing unnecessarily, bad things happen.

Pretty solid analysis. It'd be one thing if we had McCarron back there. We don't.

that reminds me of how y'all lost to Ohio State.

Sure, the Bama D was having fits containing the Buckeyes but y'all still had a chance to win and yet Lane kept calling pass plays for a QB who clearly wasn't playing well.
