My son asked me this question and I honestly didn’t know...

Can a college football team end a game with only one point.

I said no but that’s incorrect. “The only time a 1 point safety can occur is when the offense on an extra point or two point conversion attempt gets tackled in their own end zone.“

I guess I didn’t know because I don’t remember ever seeing that.

I know I have never seen that. I have never even heard of that rule to just now.

Neither had I. I believed safeties of all types were two points. I googled it and that is what I got.

Watch it happen three times next year just because we talked about it.

That implies that a touchdown occurred.

Oh. A defensive td. Got it.

Nope, I still don't get it. A touchdown would have still occurred.

I actually want to see it now that I’ve heard about it. Would be an automatic gif!

It would have to happen in OT with the score 0-0

I hadn’t heard of a kick six until I saw it.

Yes but the question is can one team only have one point. The offense scores a TD. Then gives up a safety on the extra point awarding the defense 1 point.

Will almost certainly happen in the UK/Mizzou game.

But they would have scored a TD prior to this play so the score would then be 6-1 assuming no other scores happened.

Keep in mind I didn’t say a 1-0 game. I said can a team have only 1 point. It requires the other team scoring a TD.

Yeah I read the question as end 1-0 but I see now that he asked can just one team end with one point.

Actually it would be the 3rd OT, with a score of 0-0

True but it still has to be an extra point play. Which means one team has to score a TD.

But it is a weird rule. Why any other safety is 2. Or returning a blocked extra point is 2. But an extra point safety is just 1 is weird.

Thanks. The bourbon in me read it as the winning team only had one point.

I'll pour another and hang my head in shame.

No reason to. I am 52 and college football is my pastime. And I was sure he was wrong. Until I looked it up. And I’ve had plenty of beer. I’ve never witnessed a safety on an extra point. And I don’t love college football enough to read the rule book.

Well if it’s gonna happen 3 times then let it be poor Iowa that pulls it off. Bless their hearts those players and coaches need all the damn points they can possibly get. They just flat out suck on offense.

Got you by four years.

I didn't realize that getting old happened that quickly.

The longest safety ever (of the 2-pt variety) is 60 yards. Safe to say that we’ll never see the 1-pt version.

That said…if you somehow pull it off it should be 50 points just to penalize the other team for being stupid.
