To be perfectly honest, I think Schelly left UA with a "thanks, but don't come back" comment from the University. That is IIRC.

was he a candidate to replace Bryant?
He was at Miami when Bryant died. I dont know how hard he was looked at. Its possible that we didnt pursue him because he wanted to coach the pros- he left miami after 1983.

Why do you say that? Bryant trusted him enough as his best recruiter to send him after Joe Namath. Also, while Bryant was driving around tuscaloosa with a sportswriter once they passed by the football complex lte at night. Bryant pointed to a light that was still on and said, "There's that dmn Howard Schnellenberger making me look a genius again.

At the very least it was bad timing in trying to hire him. When Bryant stepped down at the end of the '82 season, Miami was poised to be a title contender in 1983. Schnellenberger wasn't leaving that.

I'll still argue Stallings over Sherrill, Dye, McClendon, etc.
Dye
153-62-5
4 SEC Titles
1 probation
Stallings
97-61-2
1 SEC Title/ 1 SWC Title
1 MNC
1 Probation
Stallings did go 3-0 against Dye, but PFD was the better coach.

If he knew it he was the only one that did. Miami strted the seson unranked and remained that way until the fifth week of the season.

A national title makes the difference. That, and Stallings didn't rack up wins at East Carolina.

He stated that was one of the biggest reasons he didn't leave.

Now, as a side note, in the early 60's Bama had Bear Bryant as a head coach, Howard Schnellenberger s offensive coordintor, and Gene Stallings As Defensive Coordinator. Thats just NOT fair.
wow. that's an incredible trio

a great quote (exchange) indeed. I fully expected it to be this one:
Pat Dye when asked at his introductory press conference how long it would take him to beat Bama (who had won something like 8 straight in the rivalry) replied,
"Sixty minutes".
(actually took 120 minutes, bc he didnt beat bama his first yr in au, but I always liked the confidence behind that quote)

winning games at ECU and wyoming against relevant competition is part of the resume...... and if i'm not mistaken, stallings was pretty average at TAMU.
FWIW, had Dye done at Alabama what he did at Auburn in 1983, he'd have a national title..... the title is a wash, IMO

by the way, to throw a monkey wrench into this argument, Danny ford won five conference titles and a national title at clemson, with the same aamount of top 10 and top 25 finishes as dye.

yeah, but SEC > a FSU-less ACC
ford was a bit of a crook too. (EDIT: not that dye didn't have his obvious faults).

Doubtful. The bear had the same thing happen to him in 77. Finished regular season at number 3, beat the hell out #9 ohio state in the sugar bowl 35-6, got jumped by number 5 notre dame (who lost to 5-6 ole miss) when notre dame beat number one texas.

I believe that was Ken Donahue he was talking about.

I just mean yall would claim it.... AU doesn't
Does Alabama claim 77 as part of the 13?

No. We awrded a title by someone that year, but we dont claim it. The only title we claim after the polls started in 1936 that wasnt a poll title is 1941.

Bama does not claim 77 or 66. Could easily make arguments for both. Tide won it all in 64 &65 and I believe went undefeated in 66 (how do you not give it to the back-to-back champs in that case?). Tide didnt win or claim 77, but did win and claim 78 & 79.
