Mora actually seems underrated to me. He has about the same winning % at UCLA that Kelly has at ND. With far less football tradition and aura.

Stoops was the only coach to win all the BCS bowls, and he's only had 4 seasons with less than 10 wins in 16 years

I still don't believe he's the all time great coach some people claim he is. Especially since he's not been the coach he was a decade ago.

Ferentz is considered by most people to be the epitome of a mediocre coach. Perhaps more than any coach in college football.

Not sure he can be called overrated.

Right when it seems Iowa may get worn out enough to actually fire Ferentz he has a big year that saves him.

That's his eternal pattern- he'll go 6-6 or 7-5 for 5 straight years, get on the hot seat, and then saves his job by pulling a 2015 type season out of his hat.

I think LSU looked long and hard at what happened in Tennessee and did what Oklahoma dos with Stoops.

LSU fans can bitch about Miles on tRant; but the rest of the world sees it differently.

The only thing against Stoops is the conference he coaches in. Other than that, calling him overrated is stupid.

Bob Stoops had opportunities to win the 2003 and 2008 national titles, but was too conservative at key times in those games.

Overrated? Nowhere close. He does have the reputation to not finish the big one, as we have seen in the last three NC games he has had OU in. But, you must have near perfect seasons to get into that position.

1999: (7-5) Independence Bowl
2000: (13-0) Big XII and National Champions
2001: (11-2) Cotton Bowl Champions
2002: (12-2) Big XII and Rose Bowl Champions
2003: (12-2) Sugar Bowl (BCSNCG)
2004: (12-1) Big XII Champions and Orange Bowl (BCSNCG)

2005 NFL Draft saw 11 Oklahoma players taken.

2005: (8-4) Holiday Bowl Champions
2006: (11-3) Big XII Champions and Fiesta Bowl
2007: (11-3) Big XII Champions and Fiesta Bowl
2008: (12-2) Big XII Champions and BCSNCG

2009: started season highly ranked because of who came back, but 3 of the first 4 NFL Draft picks in 2010 were injured for much of the season. (8-5) Sun Bowl Champions

2010: (12-2) Big XII and Fiesta Bowl Champions
2011: (10-3) Insight Bowl Champions
2012: (10-3) Big XII Co-Champions and Cotton Bowl
2013: (11-2) Sugar Bowl Champions
2014: (8-5) Russell Athletic Bowl
2015: (11-2) Big XII Champions and CFP

He's maintained a consistent winner, despite not having more than one national title. If anything, his ONE failed season would be 2014 because of preseason hype and expectations.

Most overrated?

None of those guys are overrated.

I think Shaw is regarded as an elite coach and, while I like him a lot, he is not. Simply above average. Sumlin was always held in higher regard than deserved. Similarly, the sports writing fanboys believe Tom Herman is THE best coach out there. Pump the brakes. He's not the first to win at Houston. Not saying he's overrated but we haven't seen enough yet.

Ferentz is the second best best coach in Iowa history. Before Hayden Fry and Kirk Ferentz, Iowa was a Kansas level program. Iowa is lucky most years if there's one 4* recruit in the whole state. He's taken them to 2 Orange Bowls and a Rose Bowl, five 10+ win seasons. Yes there's been lots of average and mediocre seasons, but in the last 15 years there's only been one truly bad season. He's one of the best developers of talent in the country, he takes almost all under the radar recruits with very little offers and churns out a very high rate of NFL players for what'd you'd expect out of a school like Iowa, many of them very high quality NFL players too. Iowa players are some of the most sure things in the NFL too, Robert Gallery is really the only bust I can think of and he still had a good career once he switched positions. Iowa players almost always maximize their potential in the NFL. Ferentz is regarded as one of the best OL coaches at any level of football over the last 25-30 years.

Yes, Hayden Fry had Iowa competing at a much higher level in the 80's, but the thing is the biggest booster at Iowa are old and remember before Fry when Iowa was the Kansas of Big Ten football. They know at a place like Iowa all it takes is one bad hire and they could be right back there again. With Ferentz, he's consistent and you know what you're getting. He's consistently average, but also consistently will give you a couple really fun 10 win teams every decade. Iowa boosters don't want to risk getting rid of a known commodity looking for the next Hayden Fry and screwing up the hire and going back to the dark ages.

Guys, this is Iowa we're talking about. How much do you really expect out of Iowa that you think Ferentz hasnt gotten done?

Except when he won 10+ games in 3 straight years from 02-04. After 2009 he went into a slump and it looked like he was over the hill and done with. He was finally on the verge of getting fired before last season but seemed to do something most coaches with his tenure can't and listened to the fans and adapted himself and seems to have really turned another corner in his career. He returns most of his talent from last year, including the reigning Thorpe winner and a QB that's a prototypical Ferentz QB reminiscent of his Drew Tate, Brad Banks, Ricky Stanzi types - a guy that's not overly talented but is confident, has IT, and knows how to win. They're pre-season top 15 and are set up nicely to win 10 games again and be back in Indy

I would say Paul Johnson has to up there. People gush over him because they love his triple option offense and how it brings back memories of the good old days of college football. But if you look closely at his record, he's only 42-37 with one top 25 finish in his last six years as a head coach. His recruiting classes are perennially horrible despite being located in one of the most talent-rich states in the country. It's a case when reality doesn't really fit the narrative. Johnson's hyped up to a much better coach than he really is.

I'd put Charlie Strong #1 on that list. He has the most talented roster in the Big 12 and didn't even make a bowl game. He's gone 11-14 over the past two years in a "cupcake" conference.

What's worse? Strong at Texas or ATM paying Sumlin a cool 5 mil to finish no better than 3rd in their own division?

he has also never been widely regarded as being a top tier coach; therefore he is not overrated. Not sure why people can't see that.

This list is reserved for coaches like Malzahn, Kelley, Butch Jones. Coaches who get highly recruited players and get no results with them (I'm excluding the first year, as those players are primarily from a prior coach).

Well excluding the 1st year at Arkansas is rather convenient for Bielma.....

I was ranking Kelly #1 because he's made out to be one of the best CFB coaches. Even though if you look at his record there's little proof that he's better than Bo Pelini.

People are becoming increasingly skeptical of Charlie Strong. Even though he's still made out to be a better coach than he really is.
