Agree on the St Louis parts. Lived there 98-2001. Outside of N StL and parts of downtown and all of E StL the place was safe and fun.
And….. I have many of fun memories from Friday evening and nights at the Tittay bars in E StL. Rough places, yes. But lots of fun. The ladies were completely naked and up for anything. Anyone else remember the club with the shower on the second floor overlooking the stage?
There were two. Both in Brooklyn, IL.
Roxy’s was the most famous that had the shower dances. It was basically a whore house.
The second was right across the street, called Platinum. It was even dirtier.
Unfortunately, both are now closed. The only clubs left in Brooklyn are the black clubs, Pink Slip and Bottoms Up.
I had some crazy times there.

NOLA is not bad
You never realize just how much of a dump New Orleans is until you leave. I lived in Nashville right after the hurricane then L.A. for 11 years. I grew up in a “middle class” neighborhood in New Orleans that would be considered a so/so area in L.A. and a downright shite hole by Nashville standards.
New Orleans is a dangerous, poor, dirty, ugly dump. Cultcha is only cool in high school.
I spent 2 days in the Orleans Parish Prison one weekend in 1988. Absolutely terrifying.
It was right out of Cool Hand Luke, only it 98% black.
Surprisingly, no one bothered me or my buddies at all.

The answer is yes. If they would have moved the campus to the suburbs they would be thriving. The brutal rape, torture, and murder of one of their coeds in the 70s started the downfall
Not really the case. They’ve been an oasis on the nasty side of Birmingham for decades, wall and all, but what killed them ultimately boils down to them being a tiny liberal arts college that had a VERY bad case of mismanagement in recent years.

East St Louis.
I did my internship at Barnes-Jewish in St. Louis. I was driving there from Alabama to get started and took the wrong exit, ending up in East St. Louis. I got turned around and good Lord, I was praying for guidance to get the hell out of there. (This was before Google Maps and such)
East STL isn’t even the worst part. North St. Louis is worse, and Washington Park, IL is way worse.

The North Side of Birmingham is bad. The South Side not as bad but bad.
Birmingham is like a lot of big cities. Sure it has its absolute shithole areas that you’d best get your arse out of with the quickness should you find yourself in it but for the most part it’s no more dangerous than any other major metro.
Lot of the prior bad areas are gentrifying too. Avondale, the western end of East Lake and Norwood for example are far from the crime ridden shitholes they were in the 90s.

I recently moved from Montgomery after living there a long time. It has progressively gotten worse but it's only dangerous during the day , and mainly at night , or if you are unarmed.

I don’t know if you know the area. But growing up my great grandmother lived in East Lske and it was bad then in the 1980s. I remember going home to Center Point where I grew up and feeling safe. Now Center Point is just like East Lake. Napa can really ruin a city and be proud of ruining it.

None of these places are particularly scary unless you’re an idiot, but Walker county is a shite hole full of inbred rednecks.

Had Louisville not merged with the county in 2003 (something STL needs to do), what would the murder rate be? 150 murders last year, how many were in the original city limits? If STL were to merge with the county the murder rate would plummet by more than two thirds.
stay out of west Louisville
that's all I got

I wasn’t really saying they are scary but how the decline is. Like back in my day Center Point was like Trussville is now.

Fun fact: The scene on Vacation was supposed to be north St Louis but they changed it for either recognition or because that’s what sign they had, depending on the story.
Also, East Saint Louis is >80% demolished and/or abandoned by now.

I’m not saying Baton Rouge is some safe town, but it is extremely easy to avoid bad areas in BR. It’s not like New Orleans where you have a street that has mansions one block from the hood.
Yup, BR really is a tale of two cities. South BR is like any medium sized southern city. North BR is like…well just don’t go there.

Any of the beaches in Destin area I have never seen armed guards on the beaches protecting them. Loretta Lynn's childhood home.
Graceland is in the ghetto.
Graceland is in the ghetto.

Glad nothing violent happened. They told us Graceland is under 24hr 365 a day armed security. Easy to see why.
Graceland was actually in a slightly rural area when Elvis bought it. Like the rest of our nation, the "cancer of rich culture" has spread.
