only if his handicap was 3 or better. otherwise he would have been better off at MSU where 5 yr old mustangs are the norm

It has a Kentucky Derby kind of illness to it. Traditionalist and real horse-racing fans appreciate the customs and pageantry associated with the event, but the try-too-hard clowns have overwhelmed the infield and turned it into a tacky contest for the garish and gaudy

again, I'm inclined to agree with you. but it doesn't get under my skin. it only gets under the skin of people like the OP, who never really got over not being invited to the party.

Just when I wanted an honest conversation, the "Little brother - Know your place" crap comes out. You are one of those china eating bowtie goofballs aren't you.

That's where you are wrong and only back up my original question.

The biggest spot I ever caught on Lanier was with that identical worm, but carolina rigged, dragged slowly over rocks in the bottom of a cove in the 3 Mile Island area.

I was a GDI emo punk when I attended OM, so I hated everything about the Grove and the pretentious nature of it all.

I have developed a tolerance for it, but I don't buy it as God's gift to college football like everyone else does.

However, I would have hated everything about MSU, as well. A bunch of wannabe cowboys running around in their way-too-big trucks listening to Nickelback...no thanks.

At this stage in my life I've adopted a "live and let live" attitude, though, and I don't care how other people enjoy their time at the football games and in life in general.

right on...ive become a hippie of sorts, complete with tie dye shirts, herbal remedies and a music catalog full of the Grateful Dead and such, haha! on gamedays in the grove, I am positive that I am looked down upon with contempt by people who would never guess that I went to school there, just like they did.

I live next door to a Rebel couple. Nice neighborhood, nothing fancy. Houses here go from $200,000 - $275,000. Not exactly a rich mans paradise but a very nice area outside of the brutal taxation.

So, they want the same things we want. Security, keep our lawns looking nice and a grill out on Fridays or Saturdays. They invest a small % in mutual funds etc like we do. I have a boat, they have a swimming pool. Nobody is trying to outdo the next guy.

We swim at their pool, cook out and Jeffrey goes fishing with me. Fans from rivalry schools but we have our hearts in the right place as far as respect for each other. We can watch a game at my house because I have a large flat screen on my screened in porch and I have a bar.

We pull for opposite teams but regardless the outcome, we can fish the next day or swim at their pool. Nothing fake about those Reb fans. I don't believe many of you are like that.

Don't take this the wrong way, MullenBoys, 'cause I'm not being critical.

I think the answer is that you are becoming more introspective. You're realizing that the stereotypical OM fan that you've always hated is pretty rare. This is good.

A-holes exist. Don't go looking for them

Nah.

There were plenty of like-minded folks for me in Oxford. There was a rather large counter-culture contingent there at the time that I'm sure still exists on some level.

And to be fair, I would have found the same group of people to fit in with in Starkville. I had like-minded friends there, too.

Cleveland was also a frequent destination with a lot of similar folks to hang with. Lots of great memories from shows at the Farmhouse.

Ole Miss might not have much of a fan base after the NCAA give them a 2 yr bowl ban. They already started practicing yelling S-W-A-C at the grove. All signs point towards the SWAC.

This thread proves conclusively that the fans of each school are so sensitive about their well- deserved respective images and identities that they cannot communicate reasonably and candidly about it.
ESPECIALLY to one another.
The OP was about the remarkable elitism and pretensions of many Ole Miss fans/ students. This observation is neither new nor novel.
Does anybody here contend this depiction doesn't have a factual basis ?

Go to a game and experience what I say. Go to their message boards all over the net and the common theme is "We are the Harvard of the south."

In fact, go to any of their boards and you will see them putting down every fan base as if they are more educated while mocking others that go far beyond normal fan rivalry.

They think they are better than everyone else. That is a damn fact.

Their rebel yell "We are Ole Miss by Damn" is not just a cry, they bring their children up to believe this garbage.

Why the hell do you think they own the fan base tailgating with freaking china and wearing slacks and dress shirts in the grove along with bowties on a damn hot football Saturday? It's because that dress code which they actually believe makes them feel superior.

It's an effort to remind everyone that they have CLASS in the most artificial way. Same people known for tossing liquor bottles back in the day. Give me a break. You fall for that shite?

No I don't believe all Ole Miss fans are like that because I've seen the hard working people driving old pick-up trucks etc with Ole Miss stickers on their bumpers. And I have seen what looks like the common man in Oxford for games.

But the fact remains, and believe me I dated several - there is an attitude of elites that run things. They do in fact look down on everyone else. That is the REAL Ole Miss, like it or not.

Yea I don't really care so much what other people do. So I wouldn't say I hate it, or embrace it. If a frat boy wants to wear a suit to a game in the midle of september, I dont care, he can do that, it doesnt affect me. I never do any of that shite. I'm real simple I wear a polo with Ole Miss on it to games, and I defentitly dont look down on others as an Ole Miss fan . And yes I do hate some of our fans I've met (that act like their shite dont stink), but every school has these people, and its definetly not the majority at OM imo..

You'd feel the same about me and my family/friends , and I was born in Starkville and am maroon all the way through

If you see a person wearing a t-shirt that says " We're Just Better Than You" and you get pissy, then that's on you.

My folks still have a house in Starkville; Mrs Cane and I have a condo in Oxford. I could not care any less what anyone in either location thinks about me. Again, introspective.

Its not unusual for a state to have a "rich kids" university and a "poor kids" university, with the latter often being an Ag. school.
Happens in several states.
What sets Ole Miss apart is their remarkable pretentions, with The Grove, china, suits and even claims to be "Harvard of the South"
Nobody, NOBODY thinks of OM in these terms. Even Rice and Vanderbilt have difficulty with such claims. But Ole Miss?
Is this excessive show because its Mississippi and they think all this theatre is necessary?
