The deciding vote was Osborne. He played both and went with GT.

You are correct. Georgia Tech beat out Colorado by 1 vote.

Colorado's NC will always be tainted because of that game.

It was completely asinine that the pollsters didn't take into account the way Colorado won "The Fifth Down Game". That was the one year where the poll system could have shown the benefits of how college football decides it's champs. Colorado had a LOSS AND A TIE in addition to the Missouri game, which, in theory should have been treated as a loss. Georgia Tech only had one tie.

Georgia Tech should have been undisputed MNC.

Colorado was also gifted the Fiesta Bowl win that season.

Every team that year had at least two losses except for GT (11-0-1), Colorado (11-1-1), and Louisville (11-1-1). All the usual power teams were having bad years.

Wow that is outrageuous. How does a full set of referees miss the down and distance that badly?

Folks forget that was the year UVA was actually good until Georgia Tech beat them, then they fell off the radar after that. Pretty sure both beat Clempson that year and the Tech tie was to UNC. Tech won their rival game with Georgia @ Georgia and only played 11 games back then. I think Nebraska was #2 or #3 in the Big 8 that year and Georgia Tech stomped them in their bowl game.

Georgia Tech was the best choice for MNC that year, with or without the 5th down for Colorado.

Was Bob Stull that big of an idiot? I would have been acting a gosh darned fool if that had happened to my team. They would have to forcibly remove me from the field before that play was ran. No wonder he sucked so bad.

Post Game Confusion Sets In

Not only did they get 5 downs, the runner was down before the ball crossed the end zone. The refs were lucky to have gotten out alive.

Georgia Tech should have been the clear National Champion that year. Not only did they beat Nebraska worse than Colorado did, But Colorado lost to Illinois which was blown out 30-0 by a Clemson team that Georgia Tech beat.

Basically it proves how stupid and shortsighted people are in general.

"Well, they may have had an extra down, but it still says 'W' in the win column so I'm going to ignore that."

People typically only look at the end result and they can't be persuaded by anything else.

I agree that GT definitely should have been the undisputed Champs that year.
